{"id":36669,"date":"2019-03-21T23:24:11","date_gmt":"2019-03-21T23:24:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=36669"},"modified":"2019-03-21T23:24:11","modified_gmt":"2019-03-21T23:24:11","slug":"us-group-to-sue-over-strict-mississippi-heartbeat-abortion-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=36669","title":{"rendered":"US group to sue over strict Mississippi &#8216;heartbeat&#8217; abortion law"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"122.202898551\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">The New York-based Center for Reproductive Rights has pledged to sue over a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/subjects\/law.html\">law<\/a> introducing the strictest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/subjects\/abortion.html\">abortion<\/a> laws in the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant on Thursday signed the law, which bans most abortions once a fetal heartbeat can be detected, about six weeks into pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The centre called the new measure &#8220;cruel and clearly unconstitutional&#8221; and said it would sue Mississippi to try to block the law from taking effect on July 1.<\/p>\n<p>Bryant&#8217;s action came despite a federal judge&#8217;s decision last year striking down a less-restrictive law limiting abortions in the state.<\/p>\n<p>After a bill signing ceremony at the state Capitol, Bryant told reporters that he&#8217;s not worried about lawsuits.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They don&#8217;t have to sue us. It&#8217;s up to them,&#8221; Bryant said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If they do not believe in the sanctity of life, these that are in organizations like Planned Parenthood, we will have to fight that fight. But it is worth it,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>Mississippi is one of several states that have considered bills this year to ban abortions once a fetal heartbeat is found.<\/p>\n<p>Abortion opponents are emboldened by new conservatives on the Supreme Court and are seeking cases to challenge the court&#8217;s 1973 ruling that legalised abortion nationwide.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A federal judge in 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/03\/mississippi-sued-toughest-abortion-law-180320075655886.html\">struck down a Mississippi law<\/a> that would ban most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, saying it is unconstitutional.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Lawmakers didn&#8217;t get the message,&#8221; Hillary Schneller, staff lawyer for the Center for Reproductive Rights, said in a statement Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They are determined to rob Mississippians of the right to abortion, and they are doing it at the expense of women&#8217;s health and taxpayer money. This ban &#8211; just like the 15-week ban the governor signed a year ago &#8211; is cruel and clearly unconstitutional,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<h2>&#8216;Heartbeat&#8217; law<\/h2>\n<p>The law that Bryant signed on Thursday says a physician who performs an abortion after a fetal heartbeat is detected could face revocation of his or her Mississippi medical license.<\/p>\n<p>It also says abortions could be allowed after a fetal heartbeat is found if a pregnancy endangers a woman&#8217;s life or one of her major bodily functions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The House and Senate both rejected efforts to allow exceptions for pregnancies caused by rape or incest.<\/p>\n<p>Georgia and Tennessee are among the states considering similar bills.<\/p>\n<p>Kentucky&#8217;s law banning abortion after the detection of a heartbeat was immediately challenged by the American Civil Liberties Union when Republican Governor Matt Bevin signed it on March 14, and a federal judge temporarily blocked it.<\/p>\n<p>A federal judge on Wednesday also blocked another Kentucky law that would ban abortion for women seeking to end their pregnancies because of the gender, race or disability of the fetus.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The New York-based Center for Reproductive Rights has pledged to sue over a new law introducing the strictest abortion laws in the United States.
