{"id":36455,"date":"2019-03-20T18:22:34","date_gmt":"2019-03-20T18:22:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=36455"},"modified":"2019-03-20T18:22:34","modified_gmt":"2019-03-20T18:22:34","slug":"eu-hits-google-with-1-69bn-fine-for-abusing-online-ads-market","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=36455","title":{"rendered":"EU hits Google with $1.69bn fine for abusing online ads market"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"134.083225973\">\n<p class=\"speakable\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/european-union.html\">European Union<\/a>\u00a0regulators have fined\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/google.html\">Google<\/a>\u00a0$1.69bn for blocking rival online search advertisers, hitting the US-based tech giant with a third penalty in two years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The punishment on Wednesday brought Google&#8217;s total tab with the bloc<a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/european-union.html\"> <\/a>$9.31bn, which amounts to far less than the maximum fine of 10 percent of the company&#8217;s annual turnover.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">In the latest ruling, Google and parent company Alphabet were found to have breached EU rules by imposing restrictive clauses in contracts with websites that used its AdSense advertising business.<\/p>\n<p>Those clauses prevented competitors from placing their ads on such sites,\u00a0<span>forcing the websites to reserve the most profitable space on their search results pages for Google&#8217;s adverts and a requirement to seek written approval from the internet giant before making changes to the way in which any rival adverts were displayed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Google abused its dominance to stop websites using brokers other than the AdSense platform,&#8221;<span>\u00a0Margrethe Vestager, <span>the EU&#8217;s competition commissioner,\u00a0<\/span>said on Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The AdSense advertising case was triggered by a complaint from Microsoft in 2010. Both companies subsequently dropped complaints against each other in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>According to Adrian Mars, a technology journalist, this latest fine was a big hit for the Silicon Valley giant.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Alphabet Google &#8230; made $30.7bn pre-tax profits last year, so they&#8217;ve lost a third of that so far in fines,&#8221; Mars said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They will have to pay it eventually, if they don&#8217;t win appeals.
