{"id":36195,"date":"2019-03-19T07:22:37","date_gmt":"2019-03-19T07:22:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=36195"},"modified":"2019-03-19T07:22:37","modified_gmt":"2019-03-19T07:22:37","slug":"nzs-crusaders-rugby-team-eyes-name-change-after-shootings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=36195","title":{"rendered":"NZ&#8217;s Crusaders rugby team eyes name change after shootings"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"95.9646936656\">\n<p class=\"speakable\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/new-zealand.html\">New Zealand&#8217;<\/a>s sports minister has welcomed discussions about a potential name change for Super Rugby&#8217;s Canterbury Crusaders in the wake of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/03\/brother-muslim-worshipper-words-gunman-190315152715528.html\">mass shooting at two mosques <\/a>in Christchurch that killed 50 people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The Crusaders &#8211; Super Rugby&#8217;s most successful team with nine titles &#8211; adopted the name 23 years ago when rugby went professional, but in the wake of Friday&#8217;s mosque attacks questions have been raised over its associations with the medieval religious wars between Christians and Muslims.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">While the Crusaders initially said the name had no religious connotations and it reflected the region&#8217;s &#8220;crusading spirit&#8221;, the team&#8217;s chief executive Colin Mansbridge said they were open to talking about changing it.<\/p>\n<p>Sports Minister Grant Robertson said on Tuesday such discussions were appropriate.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m aware of the conversations that they&#8217;re now having with &#8211; in particular, the Muslim community in Christchurch,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The Crusaders is a well-established name and brand, but I think it is a responsible action to undertake those conversations now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div data-embed-type=\"Brightcove\" data-embed-id=\"6015295071001\">\n<table class=\"in-article-item video\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td readability=\"5\">\n<p>Students killed in the New Zealand attacks remembered by classmates (1:36)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<h2><strong>&#8216;It&#8217;s their team, too&#8217;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Robertson said he would not voice his own opinion until the team had finished their consultations with the local community and he had spoken to officials.<\/p>\n<p>The team&#8217;s decision to discuss the issue was also welcomed by the local Christchurch newspaper The Press.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What was acceptable to the general populace in the mid-1990s may not be now, given New Zealand&#8217;s more diverse demographics,&#8221; wrote sports journalist Tony Smith on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No one can deny the mosque murders have changed the socio-political landscape forever. There needs to be a considered debate &#8211; not a knee-jerk reaction &#8211; and the Muslim community&#8217;s view must be paramount.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Take time to get it right, but the very first step is to respectfully ask our Muslim citizens what they think.
