{"id":36067,"date":"2019-03-18T14:22:40","date_gmt":"2019-03-18T14:22:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=36067"},"modified":"2019-03-18T14:22:40","modified_gmt":"2019-03-18T14:22:40","slug":"an-unholy-alliance-monks-and-the-military-in-myanmar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=36067","title":{"rendered":"An Unholy Alliance: Monks and the Military in Myanmar"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"article-body\" readability=\"123.512578616\">\n<p>A film by Fatima Lianes<\/p>\n<p>With almost 90 percent of Myanmar&#8217;s population being devoted Buddhists, the religion has been at the heart of the nation&#8217;s very identity for centuries.<\/p>\n<p>But while the pillars of Buddhist teachings are love, compassion and peace, there is a very different variation to the philosophy being taught at the Ma Ba Tha monastery in Yangon&#8217;s Insein township.<\/p>\n<div class=\"QuoteContainer\">\n<table class=\"Skyscrapper_Body in-article-item quote\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"3\">\n<tr readability=\"10\">\n<td readability=\"11\">\n<p>You can use monks for your own purpose, for very negative aims and objectives &#8230; The monks and the military entered into this kind of unholy alliance &#8230; Many activists believe that the military is using religion to keep power.<\/p>\n<p class=\"quoted-author\">Khin Zaw Win, activist and communal religious analyst<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p>The monks there are connected to one of the world&#8217;s worst humanitarian crises, the systematic persecution and genocide of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/subjects\/rohingya.html\">Rohingya<\/a>\u00a0in Rakhine state.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Rohingya Muslim people &#8230; are discriminated against and treated like animals by the Buddhist people,&#8221; says a Rohingya who asked to disclose his identity.<\/p>\n<p><span>Formed in 2012,\u00a0<\/span><span>ultra-nationalist monks organisation\u00a0<\/span><span>Ma Ba Tha &#8211; which\u00a0<\/span><span>translates to &#8216;the protection of race and religion&#8217; &#8211;\u00a0<\/span><span>spearheaded most of the rhetoric that fueled anti-Muslim hatred in recent years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;If one is not loyal to the nation, our country and race will disappear &#8230; You have to follow the culture and the rules of this country,&#8221;\u00a0<span>says Ma Ba Tha chairman Ashin Tilawaka.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>&#8220;Because I was their inspiration and because Buddhism is now facing some problems &#8211; we face threats and attacks &#8211; I was asked to be in charge of Ma Ba Tha to protect our race and religion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Many in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/myanmar.html\">Myanmar<\/a> believe<span>\u00a0that after the transition from military rule to civilian government in 2011, the military intentionally fueled divisions among Buddhist groups.\u00a0<span>They<\/span><span>\u00a0aligned with the most nationalistic Buddhist leaders &#8211; enhancing the army&#8217;s popularity and influence.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Military leaders approached our fellow monks with offers of financial support and gifts &#8230; This emboldened the monks to rise up and speak up in public to spread the pro-military propaganda, spreading hatred between religions,&#8221; says U Gambira, a former monk who fled to Thailand in 2016.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"imagecontainer item\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/3\/18\/77821373b6ab41719356e5ca780a0ee7_18.jpg\">\n<table class=\"image\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1.5\">\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/3\/18\/77821373b6ab41719356e5ca780a0ee7_18.jpg\" border=\"0\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td class=\"caption\">Since Myanmar&#8217;s independence from British rule in 1948 the country has embraced its Buddhist tradition as a way of consolidating its national identity [Al Jazeera]<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Activists like Khin Zaw Win, who is also a communal religious analyst, are concerned about the rise of nationalism and anti-Muslim rhetoric as well as the monks&#8217; close relationship with the military.<\/p>\n<p><span>While &#8220;Muslims have been in Myanmar for centuries,&#8221; he explains that today, &#8220;even educated people in Myanmar say that &#8230; &#8216;very soon Rakhine state will be full of Muslim Rohingyas and the Buddhists will be swallowed.&#8217; So it&#8217;s like &#8216;we are defending our country, our society and our religion.&#8217; It&#8217;s a very strong message but totally wrong. It&#8217;s quite frightening. And that is the real danger of these extremist monks.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You can use monks for your own purpose, for very negative aims and objectives &#8230; <span>The NLD government doesn&#8217;t view the Ma Ba Tha very favourably, so t<\/span>he monks and the military entered into this kind of unholy alliance &#8230;\u00a0<span>Many activists believe that the military is using religion to keep power,&#8221; he says.\u00a0<\/span>&#8220;There is a lot of evidence, not made public, that the military is supporting the Ma Ba Tha. The Ma Ba Tha is flushed with cash. They&#8217;ve got lots of money.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Al Jazeera&#8217;s unprecedented access to the Ma Ba Tha monastery and its leaders offers a glimpse into how\u00a0their ultra-nationalist agenda is becoming the blueprint for the political structure of the country.
