The dead included women and children.

The attacker had legally obtained five guns, including semiautomatic weapons. New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern vowed to introduce tougher gun laws in the wake of the attack.

”Undoubtedly New Zealanders will question how someone could have come to have been in a position of weapons of this nature,” she told reporters on Saturday.

“One of the issues we’re facing is that the guns that were used in the case appear to have been modified,” Ardern added. “That is a challenge that police have been facing and that’s a challenge that we will look to address in changing our laws.”

Ardern met the leaders of New Zealand’s Muslim community, offered her condolences and assured government support.

“It is my job to ensure your safety, your freedom to worship safely, your freedom to express your culture and religion,” she said.

Mourners pay their respects to the victims of the March 15 mosque attacks, in Christchurch [Michael Bradley/AFP]

            SOURCE:
Al Jazeera and news agencies

An imam who was leading prayers at a Christchurch mosque when a gunman brandishing semiautomatic weapons mowed down his congregation has said that the Muslim community’s love for New Zealand would not be shaken by the massacre.
