{"id":357,"date":"2013-07-19T11:08:03","date_gmt":"2013-07-19T11:08:03","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2015-06-01T08:01:10","modified_gmt":"2015-06-01T08:01:10","slug":"contentegyptian-president-security-pledge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=357","title":{"rendered":"Egyptian president in security pledge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Egyptian President Adly Mansour vowed yesterday to battle for security \u201cto the end\u201d, as the military warned it would clamp down on any violence in rallies planned by Mohamed Mursi\u2019s supporters and opponents.<br \/>\n\u201cWe are at a decisive moment in Egypt\u2019s history, which some want to steer into the unknown,\u201d Mansour, installed as interim leader by the military after Mursi\u2019s overthrow on July 3, said in a televised address.<br \/>\nMursi\u2019s Muslim Brotherhood has refused to recognise Mansour\u2019s government, instead placing its hopes in sustained protests it believes may reverse the coup that toppled the elected president after nationwide demonstrations against him.<br \/>\nAlthough mostly peaceful, Brotherhood rallies have led to clashes that have killed dozens of people since Mursi\u2019s ouster.<br \/>\n\u201cWe will fight the battle for security to the end. We will preserve the revolution,\u201d said Mansour, who was a top judge before becoming president.<br \/>\nMansour\u2019s speech came as the military deployed reinforcements to the restive Sinai peninsula, where suspected militants killed a policeman yesterday.<br \/>\nSeveral policemen and soldiers have been killed in drive-by shootings and rocket attacks since Mursi\u2019s overthrow.<br \/>\nIn his speech, Mansour again offered an olive branch to Mursi\u2019s Muslim Brotherhood.<br \/>\nBut he also pledged \u201ctransitional justice,\u201d amid calls for the prosecution of Mursi and a crackdown on the Islamists.<br \/>\n\u201cThe framework of justice and reconciliation extends to all,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nMursi has been detained by the military in a secret location since his ouster.<br \/>\nThe Brotherhood and anti-Mursi groups have called for new rallies today, prompting the military to issue a stern warning.<br \/>\n\u201cThe armed forces warn against any deviation from peaceful expressions of opinion, and the resort to violence,\u201d it said in a statement on its Facebook page.<br \/>\n\u201cWhoever resorts to violence in Friday\u2019s protests will endanger his life, and will be treated with utmost decisiveness, within legal bounds,\u201d the statement added.<br \/>\nBrotherhood officials said that they had insisted on Mursi\u2019s reinstatement in a meeting with EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who visited Cairo on Wednesday.<br \/>\nIt was \u201cimpossible to get engaged in the political process under the rules of a military coup,\u201d one official, Amr Darrag, said he told Ashton.<br \/>\n\u201cPeople are increasing on the street,\u201d Darrag said of Brotherhood-led protests demanding Mursi\u2019s reinstatement.<br \/>\n\u201cThe military will definitely keep making mistakes, and definitely more people will come to our side,\u201d he added.<br \/>\nThe Brotherhood says Mursi could call for early elections if reinstated.
