{"id":35681,"date":"2019-03-16T08:22:53","date_gmt":"2019-03-16T08:22:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=35681"},"modified":"2019-03-16T08:22:53","modified_gmt":"2019-03-16T08:22:53","slug":"algeria-protests-politics-loom-over-the-derby-of-algiers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=35681","title":{"rendered":"Algeria protests, politics loom over the derby of Algiers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"216.149020967\">\n<p class=\"speakable\"><strong>Algiers, Algeria<\/strong> &#8211; Derby days in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/algeria.html\">Algeria<\/a>&#8216;s capital are typically festive occasions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">From the working class neighbourhoods of Bab El Oued and the Casbah to central Algiers, public spaces are brimming\u00a0<span>with jersey-wearing supporters of MC Alger (MCA) and\u00a0<span>USM Alger (USMA).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">But on Thursday, as the two rival clubs prepared to battle for the local bragging rights, fans seemed more interested in the political arena than the football pitch.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I love MC Alger, I never miss a match,&#8221; explained Abdellaoui, a vendor of football scarves and flags in the Lower Casbah.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But right now, this is more important,&#8221; he added, pointing to an Algerian flag perched on his cart.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>A customer nearby jumped in: &#8220;If I just suffered a death in the family, how could I celebrate my friend&#8217;s wedding? We have to fix the problems in the country before we can have fun in the stadium.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"imagecontainer item\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/3\/15\/fab7f4824b364c8abce6635f20fc9544_18.jpg\">\n<table class=\"image\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1.5\">\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/3\/15\/fab7f4824b364c8abce6635f20fc9544_18.jpg\" border=\"0\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td class=\"caption\">&#8216;I never miss a match &#8230; But right now, this is more important&#8217;\u00a0 [Maher Mezahi\/Al Jazeera]\u00a0<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Since February 22, hundreds of thousands of people have been protesting in Algiers and other parts of the country against President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/03\/abdelaziz-bouteflika-profile-algeria-ailing-leader-190304193802355.html\">Abdelaziz Bouteflika<\/a>&#8216;s bid to run for a fifth term in elections next month.<\/p>\n<p>As public pressure grew, the 82-year-old Bouteflika was earlier this week forced to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/03\/algeria-bouteflika-delays-elections-seek-term-190311174206302.html\">withdraw<\/a> from the race, postpone the April 18 polls and organise a national conference to restructure the constitution.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The moves, however, have failed to appease protesters, who have continued taking to the streets<span>\u00a0to denounce what they see as the government&#8217;s attempt to illegally extend the ailing leader&#8217;s hold on power.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Protest songs<\/h2>\n<p>On the streets, both MCA and USMA have been hugely influential in giving a voice to protesters &#8211; including the song La Casa del Mouradia by the latter&#8217;s fans which has been completely adopted by Algerians from all walks of life.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The song was named after Netflix&#8217;s La Casa de Papel (Money Heist) TV series and lambasts Bouteflika&#8217;s four terms of governance.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><em>&#8220;In the first [term], they tricked us with &#8216;reconciliation&#8217;,<\/em> <br \/><em>In the second [term] it became clear: &#8216;La Casa del Mouradia&#8217;,<\/em> <br \/><em>In the third [term] the country suffered due to personal interests,<\/em> <br \/><em>In the fourth [term] the puppet died and the problem remains.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>MCA supporters also have a song that has seeped into the movement &#8211; Fi Sog Elil, which translates as The Night Market.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Ask me why? I&#8217;ll tell you to look underneath you,<\/em> <br \/><em>There are people who have lunch but not dinner,<\/em> <br \/><em>Ask me how? I&#8217;ll tell you it&#8217;s just like this,<\/em> <br \/><em>The authorities have left nothing,<\/em> <br \/><em>Ask me since when? However, the two groups of supporters quickly denied any possible cooperation, regardless of their shared stance against &#8220;Le Pouvoir&#8221; &#8211;\u00a0<span>a vague term Algerians use to refer to the\u00a0<\/span><span>shadowy\u00a0<\/span><span>clique of politicians, high-ranking military officials and oligarchs who they believe have been running the country.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Late on Wednesday evening, two of MCA&#8217;s biggest ultra groups decided to boycott the match, which on Thursday left some of the lower blocks of the\u00a0Stade du 5 Juillet\u00a0<span>conspicuously<\/span><span>\u00a0empty.\u00a0<span>USMA&#8217;s supporters, however, showed up en masse.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>As the match went under way, MCA largely dominated first-half possession on the pitch\u00a0 &#8211; but USMA won the all-important battle of the terraces.\u00a0<span>There&#8217;s a saying in Algerian football that the spectacle is not on the pitch but rather in the stands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>USMA fans sang Qilouna, a song that criticises the government&#8217;s exploration of shale gas reserves in the Algerian Sahara.<\/p>\n<p>On the stroke of half time, Mehdi Benaldhia put MCA ahead and, for a fleeting moment, 20,000 spectators were solely concentrated on a football match.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"imagecontainer item\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/3\/15\/89e6742516d54175866a18507f0a6f59_18.jpg\">\n<table class=\"image\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1.5\">\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/3\/15\/89e6742516d54175866a18507f0a6f59_18.jpg\" border=\"0\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td class=\"caption\">For some fans, Algeria&#8217;s political upheaval overshadowed the match [Maher Mezahi\/Al Jazeera]\u00a0<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>After the break, every member from the USMA supporters&#8217; Ouled El Bahdja group<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>raised their open palms and belted out &#8220;Oh, oh, there won&#8217;t be a fifth [term]&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Both sides went on to trade goals in the dying moments of the match but the most captivating moment of the second half came in the final five minutes.<\/p>\n<p>With the two teams deadlocked at 2-2, spontaneous unified chants broke out from the east and west stands.<\/p>\n<p>The first rallying cries responded to Ahmed Ouyahia, <span>Algeria&#8217;s recently deposed prime minister, who had previously told the tossing-flower protesters that that was how the war had started in Syria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Oh Ouyahia, Algeria isn&#8217;t Syria!&#8221; echoed throughout the bowels of the stadium.<\/p>\n<p>These chants were immediately followed by those in attendance addressing Bouteflika, who has yet to resign after delaying the elections despite his term coming to an end in late April.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Bouteflika, there won&#8217;t be a fifth term,&#8221; the fans sung.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the proceedings on the pitch ended with MCA converting a dubious penalty in the final moments of the match &#8211; and claiming the local bragging rights.<\/p>\n<p>As spectators filed out, focus shifted from the hotly contested football match to Friday&#8217;s mass protests, which went on attract the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/03\/fresh-anti-bouteflika-protests-algeria-allies-turn-190315115305675.html\">highest number<\/a> of demonstrators yet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One USMA supporter from out of town even laughed off the loss.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are all still first in the league, and tomorrow [protesting on the streets], we are going to win!&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Algiers, Algeria &#8211; Derby days in Algeria&#8217;s capital are typically festive occasions.
