{"id":35103,"date":"2019-03-12T21:22:48","date_gmt":"2019-03-12T21:22:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=35103"},"modified":"2019-03-12T21:22:48","modified_gmt":"2019-03-12T21:22:48","slug":"british-mps-reject-theresa-mays-brexit-deal-for-second-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=35103","title":{"rendered":"British MPs reject Theresa May&#8217;s Brexit deal for second time"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"112.126122608\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">British legislators have rejected beleaguered Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/theresa.html\">Theresa May<\/a>&#8216;s Brexit deal, plunging the future of the UK&#8217;s bid to leave the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/european-union.html\">European Union<\/a> deeper into crisis and raising the possibility of a delayed departure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">MPs in the lower chamber House of Commons on Tuesday voted 391 to 242\u00a0against May&#8217;s plan, fewer than 24 hours after she claimed to have won meaningful concessions from Brussels over the deal&#8217;s contentious so-called &#8220;backstop&#8221; clause.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The result marked a second defeat within two months for the prime minister over her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/events\/brexit.html\">Brexit<\/a> strategy after MPs overwhelmingly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/01\/uk-parliament-votes-brexit-deal-190115180151267.html\">rejected<\/a> the proposed withdrawal agreement by a margin of 230 <span>in January<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>MPs are now set to vote on\u00a0<span>Wednesday\u00a0<\/span>on whether to leave the EU without a deal, as promised by May, 16 days before the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-kingdom.html\">UK<\/a> is scheduled to depart the bloc on March 29.<\/p>\n<p>If legislators opt against departing without an agreement on future relations, the government will hold another vote the following day on whether to request an extension to Article 50 &#8211;\u00a0the exit clause in the EU&#8217;s constitution &#8211; from Brussels\u00a0in a bid to buy more time as it seeks to strike a different divorce deal.<\/p>\n<p>Following the defeat on Tuesday, May said she was &#8220;<span>passionate&#8221; about delivering Brexit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;But I equally passionately believe that the best way to do that is to leave in an orderly way with a deal,&#8221; she added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Leader of the main opposition Labour Party\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/features\/2017\/06\/profile-jeremy-corbyn-170609051643796.html\">Jeremy Corbyn<\/a>\u00a0said the result meant May&#8217;s plan for leaving the EU was &#8220;dead&#8221; and called on the government to adopt his proposals for an alternative departure from the bloc.<\/p>\n<p><span><span>The EU has said no other terms of withdrawal are available to the UK other than the deal brokered with May during months of fractious back-and-forth negotiations, however.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for European Council President Donald Tusk said MPs second rejection of the agreed withdrawal plan <span>&#8220;significantly increased&#8221; the risk of a &#8220;no-deal&#8221; divorce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;<span>Should there be a UK reasoned request for an extension, the EU27 will consider it and decide by unanimity,&#8221; the spokesperson added, citing the 27 members of the bloc minus the UK.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>The EU&#8217;s Brexit\u00a0negotiator Michel Barnier, meanwhile, said the bloc had done &#8220;everything it can to help get the Withdrawal Agreement over the line&#8221;.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>&#8220;The impasse can only be solved in the UK. Our &#8216;no-deal&#8217; preparations are now more important than ever before,&#8221; Barnier <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MichelBarnier\/status\/1105552915480150016\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> in a tweet.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.electoralcommission.org.uk\/find-information-by-subject\/elections-and-referendums\/past-elections-and-referendums\/eu-referendum\/electorate-and-count-information\" target=\"_blank\">Nearly<\/a><span>\u00a052 percent of Britons &#8211; more than 17 million people &#8211; voted in favour of quitting the 28-member EU during a June 2016 referendum.
