Repeat offenders could face a 15-day jail sentence.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Parliament approved the bill in the third reading and endorsed a separate bill that will block anyone publishing &#8220;fake news&#8221; online that is perceived to threaten public health and security.<\/p>\n<p>Critics see the bill, which President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/vladimir-putin.html\">Vladimir Putin<\/a> is expected to sign into law once approved by the upper-house Federation Council, as part of Kremlin efforts to stifle criticism and tighten control.<\/p>\n<p><span>Communist lawmaker Alexei Kurinnyi warned that the authorities could use the &#8220;fake news&#8221; bill to punish critics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div data-embed-type=\"Brightcove\" data-embed-id=\"5992424581001\">\n<table class=\"in-article-item video\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td readability=\"5\">\n<p>WhatsApp limits forwards to 5 recipients to check fake news<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>&#8220;Dear colleagues, let&#8217;s ask ourselves, why do people believe the so-called fake news?
