{"id":34561,"date":"2019-03-07T17:22:48","date_gmt":"2019-03-07T17:22:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=34561"},"modified":"2019-03-07T17:22:48","modified_gmt":"2019-03-07T17:22:48","slug":"open-challenge-north-korea-slams-us-s-korea-military-drills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=34561","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Open challenge&#8217;: North Korea slams US-S Korea military drills"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"124.053064959\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">North Korea has attacked the ongoing joint military exercises between Seoul and Washington as an &#8220;open challenge&#8221; to the efforts towards peace on the Korean Peninsula.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">On Saturday, the US and South Korea agreed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/03\/south-korea-key-joint-military-exercises-190303055241782.html\">replace two major annual war games<\/a> &#8211; the Key Resolve and Foal Eagle drills &#8211; with a shorter &#8220;Dong Maeng&#8221; or &#8220;Alliance&#8221; exercise which kicked off this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The move was designed to further ease tensions with Pyongyang following the dramatic detente since early 2018.<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;The ill-boding moves of the South Korean military authorities and the US are a wanton violation of the DPRK-US joint statement [in Singapore] and the North-South declarations in which the removal of hostility and tensions were committed to,&#8221; <span>the North&#8217;s official news agency, KCNA, said.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div data-embed-type=\"Brightcove\" data-embed-id=\"6009286514001\">\n<table class=\"in-article-item video\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td readability=\"5\">\n<p>South Korea offers to facilitate future Kim-Trump talks<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p>There are almost 28,500 US troops stationed in South Korea, and their annual drills with tens of thousands of South Korean soldiers have always infuriated the North &#8211; with Pyongyang condemning the manoeuvres as provocative rehearsals for invasion.<\/p>\n<p>However, following the first meeting between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore last year, Trump raised eyebrows at a press conference when he said Washington would suspend the &#8220;very provocative&#8221; US joint military exercises with South Korea.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The two leaders also signed a vaguely worded pledge on denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear what &#8220;violation&#8221; of that pledge North Korea was referencing in its statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The flare-up comes just days after Trump and Kim held a second summit, this time in Vietnam, but talks concluded early with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/02\/trump-kim-leave-vietnam-summit-agreement-190228110254654.html\">no progress<\/a> towards Washington&#8217;s goal of getting North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n<p>Following the stalemate, researchers said this week that Pyongyang was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/03\/north-korea-restoring-part-launch-site-promised-destroy-190306063127139.html\">rebuilding the Sohae long-range rocket site<\/a> after Kim had agreed last year to shut it as part of confidence-building measures.<\/p>\n<h2>A &#8216;disappointed&#8217; Trump<\/h2>\n<p>On Thurday, US experts said the missile launch site was &#8216;operational&#8217; again.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Movement of cargo vehicles was spotted recently around a factory at Sanumdong in the capital Pyongyang, which produced North Korea&#8217;s first intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-states.html\">United States<\/a>, South Korea&#8217;s JoongAng Ilbo and Donga Ilbo newspapers reported, citing legislators briefed by the National Intelligence Service (NIS).<\/p>\n<p><span>JoongAng Ilbo\u00a0<\/span>also quoted Suh as saying North Korea continued to operate its uranium-enrichment facility at the main Yongbyon nuclear complex.
