This is ridiculous, they are treating us with contempt!&#8221;, 19-year-old Hamza, a science and technology student who, like many others, has known no other president, told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<p><span>Bouteflika, who took office in 1999, gave his last public speech dates back in 2012, a year before he had a\u00a0debilitating stroke that confined him to a wheelchair.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"imagecontainer item\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/3\/5\/938d1f1c2b274982ab637664a7397475_18.jpg\">\n<table class=\"image\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1.5\">\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/3\/5\/938d1f1c2b274982ab637664a7397475_18.jpg\" border=\"0\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td class=\"caption\">Algeria has been rocked by protests since February 22 over Bouteflika&#8217;s bid for re-election [Toufik Doudou\/AP Photo]<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>On Tuesday, the young protesters chanted slogans against the ailing leader and his brother Said, a presidential adviser seen by many as having major political influence.<\/p>\n<p>They also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/03\/thousands-march-algeria-president-bid-term-190301142051350.html\">denounced<\/a>\u00a0widespread corruption and government inefficiency, echoing those taking part in\u00a0<span>mass nationwide<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/02\/algerians-protest-bouteflika-bid-term-190222151225077.html\">protests<\/a>\u00a0<span>on February 22 and March 1, while also insisting on &#8220;silmiya&#8221; (peaceful) &#8211; a key theme of the rallies so far. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Alongside the flags and political banners, there were plenty of tongue-in-cheek signs on display during the students&#8217; rally, as well as a smattering of pop-culture references.<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;Algeria has no master. Algeria is a free country,&#8221; read one banner, in reference to a line said by a character in the popular Harry Potter series. &#8220;Accio loyal government,&#8221; said a different sign, imitating one of the fictional young wizard&#8217;s spells.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-conversation=\"none\" data-lang=\"en\" readability=\"7.27528089888\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">\ud83d\ude2d\ud83d\ude02\ud83d\ude02 Students downtown <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Algiers?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Algiers<\/a> went full <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/HarryPotter?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#HarryPotter<\/a> during their anti- <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Bouteflika?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Bouteflika<\/a> protests. A poli science student told me: &#8220;You know, it&#8217;s like in Harry Potter when Donny the slave gets his freedom.&#8221; <br \/>They are brave, beautiful and hilarious.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/YouthPower?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#YouthPower<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/AlgeriaProtests?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#AlgeriaProtests<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/i0qbnlNzeM\"> pic.twitter.com\/i0qbnlNzeM <\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Farah | \u0641\u0631\u062d (@souamesfarah) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/souamesfarah\/status\/1102938459486994432?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 5, 2019<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Another student <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HamdiBaala\/status\/1102868770584961024\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a>,\u00a0&#8220;Where is democracy? I don&#8217;t see it&#8221;, a meme inspired by Dora the Explorer. A different student <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HamdiBaala\/status\/1102874196886151168\" target=\"_blank\">brought<\/a> a completely off-topic sign: &#8220;Subscribe to PewDiePie,&#8221; the popular YouTube channel.<\/p>\n<p><span>Humour is also how many Algerians have been dealing with the president&#8217;s absence since the protests erupted last month. A campaign launched on Facebook encouraged subscribers to start calling the university hospital in Geneva, Switzerland, where Bouteflika is believed to have been since February 24 for &#8220;routine medical checks&#8221;, according to officials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The hospital has\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jeuneafrique.com\/745020\/politique\/bouteflika-en-suisse-quand-les-algeriens-appellent-lhopital-ou-est-soigne-leur-president\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"InternetLink\"><span>reportedly<\/span><\/span><\/a><span> received hundreds of phone calls from Algeria. &#8220;Please tell Mr Bouteflika that the Algerian people are worried about him,&#8221; an Algerian can be heard saying in the recording of one such call<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=f6DiSZBHbpQ\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"InternetLink\"><span>posted on YouTube<\/span><\/span><\/a><span>, as an increasingly frustrated operator tries to stick to the script of not revealing patients&#8217; identities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On Sunday, Abdelghani Zaalane, Bouteflika&#8217;s campaign manager, formalised the president&#8217;s candidacy by filing paperwork on his behalf, a move seen by legal experts as illegal because candidates are required by Algerian law to register themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Zaalane also read a letter attributed to Bouteflika meant to calm the protests,\u00a0<span>in which he offered not to serve a full term if he won next month&#8217;s vote. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>According to the statement, Bouteflika&#8217;s first reaction to the demonstrations was to vow to organise a national conference that would set a date for new elections that he would not contest.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Still, the proposals failed to appease public anger. We&#8217;re not renting apartments here,&#8221; one sign said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;The regime is just trying to stall in order to replace Bouteflika with someone who suits them.
