Venetian officials have officially confirmed plans to charge day visitors up to $11 (\u20ac10) to enter.<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>And if you don&#8217;t pay, you could be fined up to \u20ac450 ($511).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Until recently, the Italian city&#8217;s tourist tax only applied to those spending the night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But as Venice sees visitor numbers soar ever higher and streets become ever busier, government measures to combat overtourism are toughening.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"Paragraph__component\"><span>Over 2018&#8217;s busy May Day weekend, the local government <a href=\"https:\/\/cnn.com\/travel\/article\/venice-separates-tourists-and-locals\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">restricted the movement of visitors <\/a>and implemented moves to separate the tourists and locals wandering the city center.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span>This new law is the latest &#8212; and arguably the most extreme &#8212; measure designed to handle the nearly 30 million tourists who visit Venice each year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The government says the money collected will go towards costs such as waste management and maintaining the heritage city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<h3>Extreme measures<\/h3>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"CaptionedImage__component\" readability=\"10\">\n<div class=\"Image__component CaptionedImage__image Image__hasAspectRatio\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image__image\" src=\"https:\/\/dynaimage.cdn.cnn.com\/cnn\/e_blur:500,q_auto:low,w_50,c_fill,g_auto,h_28,ar_16:9\/http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.cnn.com%2Fcnnnext%2Fdam%2Fassets%2F180514154638-venice-may-day-tourism.jpg\" alt=\"In May 2018, Venice officials attempted to limit flows of tourists in the streets.\"><\/div>\n<p>In May 2018, Venice officials attempted to limit flows of tourists in the streets.<\/p>\n<p>ANDREA PATTARO\/AFP\/AFP\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>For the rest of 2019, visitors will be charged \u20ac3 ($3.40) but from January 1, 2020, it&#8217;ll mostly be \u20ac6 ($6.80) &#8212; except for a couple of quieter days during the year where it&#8217;ll be less (\u20ac3) or more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Meanwhile, on the busiest days when the city&#8217;s flooded with tourists &#8212; you&#8217;ll have to pay \u20ac8 ($9). Venice is engulfed by tourists and we have to reduce the day trippers in favor of a more qualified, let&#8217;s call it &#8216;luxury&#8217; tourism. The alternative is simply that we all are uncomfortable in Venice.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But a Venetian gondolier, who says his name is Cuba, told CNN he&#8217;s not convinced the move addresses the real problems associated with overtourism in Venice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;Entering Venice will be like entering into a museum, I don&#8217;t think the measure will help the problem of transforming Venice into a Disneyland, with fake glass shops and piazza sellers replacing the old &#8216;bottega&#8217; or artisan shops,&#8221; he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(CNN) \u2014 A trip to the already pricey city of Venice, Italy, will now leave your wallet even emptier than before.
