The artist was in the lift for around 30 minutes, according to staff at the Conservatorium Hotel, where the incident occurred.<\/p>\n<p>Ruurd Hooijer, director of sales and marketing at the hotel, told CNN in a phone interview that the lift got stuck after too many people piled in. &#8220;It&#8217;s something we have never experienced before,&#8221; Hooijer said, adding that the occupants were rescued by the fire brigade.<\/p>\n<div class=\"BasicArticle__image BasicArticle__padLarge\" readability=\"31.5\">\n<div readability=\"8\">\n<div class=\"Image__component\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image__image\" src=\"https:\/\/dynaimage.cdn.cnn.com\/cnn\/e_blur:500,q_auto:low,w_50,c_fit\/http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.cnn.com%2Fcnnnext%2Fdam%2Fassets%2F190228103914-03-david-hockney-0227-restricted.jpg\" alt=\"Hockney's work is part of a new exhibition at the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam.\"><\/div>\n<p>Hockney&#8217;s work is part of a new exhibition at the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam.<!-- --> <span class=\"BasicArticle__credit\">Credit: <\/span><span class=\"BasicArticle__credit\">ROBIN UTRECHT\/ANP\/EPA-EFE<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Hockney was then able to get outside for his cigarette and carry on with a planned interview. &#8220;He took a seat in our courtyard and had a cup of English breakfast tea,&#8221; said Hooijer.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Paragraph__component BasicArticle__paragraph BasicArticle__pad\" readability=\"36.8230088496\">\nThe artist  was in the lift with a number of journalists, including veteran BBC presenter James Naughtie, who<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/naughtiej\/status\/1100970495372128256\" target=\"_blank\">tweeted<\/a> about the incident and described the experience in a segment BBC Radio 4&#8217;s Today program on Thursday morning.\n<\/div>\n<p>Naughtie said the group were in the lift when it suddenly jerked to a halt. &#8220;We shuffled around, wondering if the lift would be tricked into moving &#8212; it just wobbled,&#8221; he said. <\/p>\n<p>Eventually they managed to force the doors slightly open and Geordie Greig, editor of the UK&#8217;s Daily Mail newspaper, took control of the situation like a &#8220;Boy Scout,&#8221; Naughtie said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"BasicArticle__video BasicArticle__padLarge\" readability=\"32\">\n<p>Hockney at 80: An encounter with the artist<!-- --> <span class=\"BasicArticle__credit\"><\/span><span class=\"BasicArticle__credit\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Bottles of water were passed in, as well as a folding stool for the octogenarian artist to sit on. Van Gogh worshipped nature. He might have been miserable, but that doesn&#8217;t show in his work,&#8221; said Hockney in a press release for the exhibition. &#8220;There are always things that will try to pull you down. But we should be joyful in looking at the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition is the latest achievement in a stellar career for Hockney.
