Last week, eight legislators quit Labour, in part owing to frustration over his handling of Brexit.<\/p>\n<p>Labour&#8217;s statement on Monday said the party would put an amended plan for Brexit to the British parliament this week and also support a separate cross-party motion which seeks to rule out the possibility of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-kingdom.html\">United Kingdom<\/a> exiting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/european-union.html\">European Union<\/a> without a withdrawal agreement.<\/p>\n<p>The alternative Brexit strategy would include a &#8220;<span>comprehensive customs union\u00a0<span>with a UK say&#8221;,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0&#8220;close alignment&#8221; with the EU&#8217;s single market, protection for Britain&#8217;s role in the bloc&#8217;s various agencies and a wide-reaching &#8220;security agreement&#8221;, the party&#8217;s statement added.<\/p>\n<p>Labour&#8217;s Brexit\u00a0<span>Secretary Kier Starmer\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Keir_Starmer?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a><span>\u00a0in a tweet the party would back a second referendum on membership of the EU should MPs dismiss Labour&#8217;s Brexit plan during a series of votes expected to take place in the British parliament on Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\" readability=\"7.75\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">This week Labour will put its alternative plan for a vote in the House of Commons.<\/p>\n<p>If Parliament rejects our plan, then Labour will deliver on the promise we made at our annual conference and support a public vote. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/EjCifYCDJP\">https:\/\/t.co\/EjCifYCDJP<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Keir Starmer (@Keir_Starmer) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Keir_Starmer\/status\/1100090866646110210?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 25, 2019<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The move is likely to cheer many of Labour&#8217;s members who have backed calls for a so-called &#8220;people&#8217;s vote&#8221; but could also threaten the party&#8217;s popularity in pro-Brexit districts represented by Labour MPs, particularly in northern England.<\/p>\n<p>British Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/theresa.html\">Theresa May&#8217;s<\/a> ruling Conservative Party, meanwhile, accused Corbyn of wanting to &#8220;betray the will of the British people and ignore the biggest democratic vote in our nation&#8217;s history&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Labour have ripped up their promise to respect the referendum result and are now pursuing a divisive second referendum that would take us back to square one,&#8221; the Conservative Party <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/conservatives\/posts\/10156715545904279\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> in a post on its official Facebook page.<\/p>\n<p><span>Both of the country&#8217;s major parties fractured last week, with parliamentarians quitting May&#8217;s ruling Conservative Party and the main opposition Labour Party suggesting both were failed remnants of a political system in meltdown.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Ne<\/span><span>arly 52 percent of Britons &#8211; more than 17 million people &#8211;\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.electoralcommission.org.uk\/find-information-by-subject\/elections-and-referendums\/past-elections-and-referendums\/eu-referendum\/electorate-and-count-information\" target=\"_blank\">voted<\/a><span>\u00a0to leave the EU during the UK&#8217;s June 2016 referendum on membership of the bloc.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Looming Brexit deadline<\/h2>\n<p>Labour&#8217;s announcement came after\u00a0May\u00a0postponed on Sunday an expected &#8220;meaningful vote&#8221; on her widely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/02\/british-pm-promises-vote-brexit-deal-march-12-190224140114497.html\">maligned Brexit plan<\/a>, which had been expected to be held this week.<\/p>\n<p><span><span>May said MPs would have their say on the divorce deal sometime before March 13 instead.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span>&#8220;It is still within our grasp to leave the European Union with a deal on the 29th of March and that is what we are working to do,&#8221; she said.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>With just 32 days until Britain is due to leave the 28-member EU, May is making last-ditch efforts to win concessions from the bloc on the divorce package, brokered after months of arduous negotiations between London and Brussels.<\/p>\n<p>The EU has ruled out reopening the withdrawal agreement, though both sides are looking at a possible legal addendum to reassure MPs who worry the controversial Irish border\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/12\/brexit-jargon-backstop-deal-17-key-terms-explained-181201182945771.html\">backstop clause<\/a>\u00a0could keep Britain trapped in the EU&#8217;s orbit for years to come.<\/p>\n<p><span>The mechanism would guarantee no re-establishment of a hard border on the island of\u00a0<\/span><span>Ireland<\/span><span>\u00a0in the event that post-Brexit trade negotiations\u00a0between the UK and the EU prove unsuccessful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>European Council President Donald Tusk said on Monday the EU was open to Britain postponing its exit from the bloc beyond March 29, adding he had discussed the &#8220;legal and procedural context of a potential extension&#8221; when he met Sunday with May on the sidelines of an EU-Arab summit in Egypt.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I believe in the situation we are in, an extension would be a rational solution but Prime Minister May still believes she&#8217;s able to avoid this scenario,&#8221;
