{"id":33229,"date":"2019-02-26T01:22:46","date_gmt":"2019-02-26T01:22:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=33229"},"modified":"2019-02-26T01:22:46","modified_gmt":"2019-02-26T01:22:46","slug":"sudans-bashir-bans-protests-regulates-foreign-currency-trade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=33229","title":{"rendered":"Sudan&#8217;s Bashir bans protests, regulates foreign currency trade"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"137.375552748\">\n<p class=\"speakable\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/sudan.html\">Sudan<\/a>&#8216;s President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/omar-bashir.html\">Omar al-Bashir<\/a>\u00a0banned public gatherings and protests in a series of emergency decrees issued on Monday as he faces the most sustained anti-government street unrest of his 30-year rule.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">In a statement issued by the presidential palace, Bashir also announced a ban on trading or hoarding subsidised fuel products, as well as new regulations on trading and transporting foreign currency and gold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">In his decrees, Bashir authorised the public prosecutor to revoke any suspect&#8217;s immunity if they have it and set up new courts to deal with cases related to the state of emergency.<\/p>\n<p>Bashir, who came to power in a 1989 coup, on Friday declared a year-long nationwide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/02\/sudan-bashir-declares-year-state-emergency-190222193100058.html\">state of emergency<\/a> to rein in the protest campaign.<\/p>\n<div data-embed-type=\"Brightcove\" data-embed-id=\"6006046480001\">\n<table class=\"in-article-item video\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td readability=\"5\">\n<p>Sudan&#8217;s Bashir declares year-long state of emergency<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p>He also dissolved Sudan&#8217;s\u00a0federal and provincial governments as part of a major shake-up of his administration.<\/p>\n<p>But protests have carried on, with hundreds of demonstrators undeterred on Monday despite riot police firing tear gas at crowds in the capital, Khartoum.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are challenging the regime and we are not scared of the state of emergency,&#8221; said protester Erij who gave only her first name for security reasons.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have only one aim and that is to make the president step down.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Later on Monday, protesters also took to the streets in the Khartoum districts of Burri, Shambat and Al-Deim, witnesses said.<\/p>\n<p>Burri has become a site of almost daily rallies with protesters blocking streets and burning tyres and tree trunks.<\/p>\n<p>Protest organisers, an umbrella group called Alliance for Freedom and Change, called for Monday&#8217;s &#8220;rally to challenge the emergency&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Riot police also fired tear gas into the compound of Ahfad University for Women after students staged a sit-in.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Police fired tear gas when some students stepped out of the campus and began chanting slogans, that&#8217;s when some canisters hit the compound,&#8221;
