{"id":33197,"date":"2019-02-25T18:27:48","date_gmt":"2019-02-25T18:27:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=33197"},"modified":"2019-02-25T18:27:48","modified_gmt":"2019-02-25T18:27:48","slug":"syria-force-carries-out-major-evacuation-from-last-daesh-holdout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=33197","title":{"rendered":"Syria force carries out major evacuation from last Daesh holdout"},"content":{"rendered":"<div itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-io-article-url=\"http:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/1457851\/middle-east\" readability=\"94\">\n<p>\nNEAR BAGHOUZ, Syria: US-backed forces evacuated over 40 truckloads of people from Daesh\u2019s last Syria redoubt on Monday, as they sought to clear out civilians before a final push to crush the militants.<br \/>The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have slowed down their offensive on the final pocket due to the presence of civilians, with just a scrap of the Daesh \u201ccaliphate\u201d remaining from a territory that once spanned Syria and Iraq.<br \/>An AFP correspondent saw more than 46 trucks crammed with men, women and children, approaching an SDF outpost, 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of the militant redoubt.<br \/>One vehicle was packed with women clad in black and men who covered their faces. Wounded people were also among the latest evacuees.<br \/>Holdout Daesh fighters and civilians, mostly relatives of militants, are trapped in less than half a square kilometer in the village of Baghouz near the Iraqi border.<br \/>The Kurdish-led SDF evacuated nearly 5,000 men, women and children from the militant redoubt on Wednesday and Friday, but none over the weekend.<br \/>Earlier on Monday, SDF spokesman Mustefa Bali, told AFP that thousands remained inside the Daesh pocket.<br \/>\u201cAccording to what we heard from those who have left, there are nearly 5,000 people still inside,\u201d Bali said.<br \/>At the SDF screening point outside the village, SDF fighters expressed hopes that Monday\u2019s arrivals would be the last one.<br \/>\u201cWe want it to be over,\u201d Mazloum, a 29 year-old SDF fighter told AFP.<br \/>\u201cEvery day we say today is the day but we hope it will all end today and not tomorrow,\u201d he said.<br \/>Kurdish foreign affairs official Abdel Karim Omar told AFP on Monday that the SDF will announce the end of the Daesh proto-state \u201cin the next few days.\u201d<br \/>\u201cBut this does not mean that we have eliminated terrorism, which must be eradicated at the roots,\u201d he said.<br \/>Beyond Baghouz, Daesh still has thousands of fighters and sleeper cells across several countries.<br \/>In Syria, it retains a presence in the vast Badia desert, and the militants have claimed deadly attacks in SDF-held territory.<br \/>Thousands of suspected Daesh fighters have attempted to blend in with civilians fleeing the crumbling \u201ccaliphate.\u201d<br \/>According to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, around 46,000 people, including thousands of militants, have streamed out of the Baghouz pocket since early December.<br \/>The SDF screens those exiting at an outpost outside the village to weed out potential Daesh fighters.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" height=\"652\" src=\"http:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/sites\/default\/files\/%5Byyyy%5D\/%5Bmm%5D\/%5Bdd%5D\/4601424959844953.jpg\" width=\"1000\"><figcaption>\nMen suspected of being Daesh fighters wait to be searched by members of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) after leaving the group\u2019s last holdout of Baghouz, in Syria\u2019s northern Deir Ezzor province on February 22, 2019.
