{"id":33120,"date":"2019-02-25T00:41:58","date_gmt":"2019-02-25T00:41:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=33120"},"modified":"2019-02-25T00:41:58","modified_gmt":"2019-02-25T00:41:58","slug":"erdogan-at-odds-with-russia-over-control-of-syria-turkey-safe-zone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=33120","title":{"rendered":"Erdogan at odds with Russia over control of Syria-Turkey safe zone"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"105\">\n<p>\nDAMASCUS, Syria:\u00a0 More than 20 civilians were killed Sunday in central Syria when a landmine left behind by jihadists exploded under a van, the state news agency SANA said.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe ordnance left behind by the Daesh group in the town of Salamiyeh killed farmworkers who were heading to a region in the Hama province to pick truffles, SANA said, citing local police.<\/p>\n<p>\nIt was the second such incident since February 8 when a landmine that had been planted by Daesh militants\u00a0in rural Hama exploded killing seven civilians, SANA said.<\/p>\n<p>\nDaesh had a presence in Hama&#8217;s countryside before the Syrian army drove the jihadists from the area in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>\nBefore withdrawing they had planted mines in the area and rigged buildings with explosives, a tactic they have used in other areas as well.<\/p>\n<p>\nMore than 1,000 foreign militants could still be sheltering among civilians in Daesh\u2019s final stronghold in east Syria, a shred of land riddled with defensive tunnels, an official with the US-backed force trying to defeat them said on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) militia has surrounded the militants at the village of Baghouz near the Iraqi border and is trying to complete an evacuation of civilians from the tiny area before storming it or forcing a surrender.<\/p>\n<p>\nThroughout its steady advance across the Syrian stretch of Daesh\u2019s proto-state, the SDF has been slowed by the group\u2019s extensive use of tunnels and human shields \u2014 tactics it says are still being deployed in Baghouz.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cIt is expected that there are still undiscovered tunnels, even rooms underground,\u201d said Mustafa Bali, an SDF spokesman. \u201cThis creates a military problem for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\nThe capture of Baghouz will end a campaign of conventional warfare which began in the ruins of Kobani on Syria\u2019s border with Turkey in late 2014, when the SDF\u2019s strongest component, the Kurdish YPG militia, halted the militant advance.<\/p>\n<p>\nDespite the loss of its territory in Iraq and Syria, however, local and Western officials warn the militant group will still pose a threat there, going underground and using guerrilla tactics.<\/p>\n<p>\nSANA and the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a war monitor, reported that several gas cylinders exploded in Al-Hol, wounding at least 14 people and causing a huge fire late Saturday. SANA said the wounded were taken for treatment in nearby hospitals.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe SDF are closing in on militants defending their last sliver of territory.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe battle for Baghouz is now the only live front in Syria\u2019s war, which has killed more than 360,000 people and displaced millions since 2011.<\/p>\n<p>\nBeyond Baghouz, Daesh retains a presence in the vast Syrian desert, and continues to claim deadly attacks in SDF-held territory.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DAMASCUS, Syria:\u00a0 More than 20 civilians were killed Sunday in central Syria when a landmine left behind by jihadists exploded under a van, the state news agency SANA said.
