{"id":32950,"date":"2019-02-23T10:30:34","date_gmt":"2019-02-23T10:30:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=32950"},"modified":"2019-02-23T10:30:34","modified_gmt":"2019-02-23T10:30:34","slug":"venezuela-closes-colombia-border-as-aid-dispute-turns-deadly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=32950","title":{"rendered":"Venezuela closes Colombia border as aid dispute turns deadly"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"170.129818254\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Venezuelan soldiers have opened fire on indigenous people near the border with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/brazil.html\">Brazil<\/a>, killing two, as President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/nicolas-maduro.html\">Nicolas Maduro<\/a> sought to block the US-backed opposition&#8217;s efforts to bring aid into the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The violence on Friday broke out in the village of Kumarakapay in southern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/venezuela.html\">Venezuela<\/a> after an indigenous community stopped a military convoy that they believed was attempting to block aid deliveries from Brazil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Maduro, who has called the US-backed aid efforts a &#8220;cheap show&#8221;, had ordered the closure of Venezuela&#8217;s border with Brazil, where the Brazilian government said it has stockpiled 200 tonnes of food and medicine in the town of Boa Vista.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-states.html\">United States<\/a>, which is among dozens of nations to recognise opposition leader Juan Guaido as Venezuela&#8217;s legitimate president, has also been stockpiling aid in the Colombian frontier town of Cucuta to ship across the border this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Late on Friday, Maduro&#8217;s government shuttered the Tachira frontier that connects with Cucuta. That was after Guaido defied a travel ban and crossed the border to attend a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/02\/rival-concerts-backdrop-venezuela-power-struggle-190222142807321.html\">charity concert<\/a> to push for aid deliveries.<\/p>\n<p>With tensions running high after Guaido declared himself Venezuela&#8217;s interim president last month, Maduro has denied there is an humanitarian crisis in the country despite widespread shortages of food and medicine and hyperinflation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In Kumarakapay on Friday, Richard Fernandez, a community leader, told Reuters news agency that soldiers entered their village and opened fire when residents tried to block the convoy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I stood up to them to back the humanitarian aid,&#8221; Fernandez said. &#8220;And they came charging at us. directed by the opposition.<\/p>\n<h2>&#8216;Historic, irreversible&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>The Venezuelan opposition is planning to hold three simultaneous aid pushes on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from Boa Vista in Brazil, they also hope to bring in aid from the Dutch Caribbean island of Curacao and Colombia&#8217;s Cucuta, where Guaido, the opposition leader, made a surprise appearance on Friday during a concert organised by British billionaire Sir Richard Branson.<\/p>\n<p>In remarks after the event, Guaido spoke alongside Colombian President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/ivan-duque.html\">Ivan Duque<\/a> and Chilean President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/sebastian-pinera.html\">Sebastian Pinera<\/a> and said he had been able to circumvent Maduro&#8217;s travel ban only with the help of the armed forces.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The question of the moment is for the armed forces because we know society is absolutely mobilised to help others,&#8221; the western state that borders Cucuta &#8211; citing threats to Venezuela&#8217;s security.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Due to the serious and illegal threats attempted by the Government of Colombia against peace and sovereignty in Venezuela, [the Venezuelan government] has taken the decision of a total, temporary closure of all bridges that unite both countries in Tachira,&#8221; Delcy Rodriguez, Venezuela&#8217;s v<span>ice president,\u00a0<\/span>wrote on Twitter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some political analysts say the looming showdown is less about solving Venezuela&#8217;s needs and more about testing the military&#8217;s loyalty to Maduro by daring it to turn the aid away.<\/p>\n<p>Civil rights groups claim Venezuelan security forces have executed dozens and arrested hundreds of others since protests broke out in January against Maduro&#8217;s swearing-in as president.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>UN Secretary-General <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/antonio-guterres.html\">Antonio Guterres<\/a> met Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza in New York on Friday and &#8220;urged the Venezuelan authorities not to use lethal force against demonstrators,&#8221;
