{"id":32920,"date":"2019-02-23T03:26:14","date_gmt":"2019-02-23T03:26:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=32920"},"modified":"2019-02-23T03:26:14","modified_gmt":"2019-02-23T03:26:14","slug":"russian-court-extends-detention-of-suspected-us-spy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=32920","title":{"rendered":"Russian court extends detention of suspected US spy"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"136.737491432\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">A Russian court has extended the detention of a former <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-states.html\">United States&#8217;<\/a> marine charged with espionage until May 28, refusing a request that he be released under house arrest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Paul Whelan, 48, should be held in a pre-trial detention facility for a further three months to give investigators more time to look into his case,\u00a0<span>Judge Sergei Ryabtsev in\u00a0<\/span><span>Moscow&#8217;s Lefortovo District Court ruled on Friday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Whelan, who holds US, British, Canadian and Irish passports, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/12\/russia-detains-american-moscow-suspected-spying-181231092155543.html\">detained<\/a> in a Moscow hotel room on December 28 on an allegation of possessing documents containing state secrets,\u00a0a charge he denies. If found guilty, he could be imprisoned for up to 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>Sitting in a cage in the courtroom, Whelan\u00a0<span>told journalists he is\u00a0<span>&#8220;holding up well&#8221;.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I could do with care packages, food, things like that, letters from home,&#8221; he said, <span>before masked security officials cut him off.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>His lawyer Vladimir Zherebenkov said after Friday&#8217;s hearing that the decision to keep Whelan under arrest was &#8220;absolutely illegal&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Whelan&#8217;s defence <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/01\/marine-held-russia-spying-misled-lawyer-190122133408028.html\">denies any wrongdoing<\/a>, saying the American was framed by an acquaintance who handed him a flash drive allegedly containing classified information.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Whelan, who lived in the US but was in <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/russia.html\">Russia<\/a> for a wedding, met the acquaintance in Moscow and was expecting to receive photos of a May trip to the Russian countryside, Zherebenkov said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We believe that this was a provocation and a crime by his acquaintance,&#8221; he said, adding that the acquaintance could have been motivated by &#8220;career considerations&#8221; or a reluctance to return money owed to Whelan.<\/p>\n<p>He said the defence asked the judge to change his arrest conditions to house arrest in an apartment belonging to Zherebenkov, but the motion was denied.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Tense ties\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Since his detention, Whelan has been visited by officials from the US, Canadian, Irish and British embassies.<\/p>\n<p>The case has put further strain on already tense US-Russia relations as has that of another detained American, private equity chief Michael Calvey.<\/p>\n<p>The US embassy in Moscow said it was closely following the case, but could not provide any further information because Russian authorities had so far prevented Whelan from signing a privacy waiver.<\/p>\n<div data-embed-type=\"Brightcove\" data-embed-id=\"5979523509001\">\n<table class=\"in-article-item video\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td readability=\"5\">\n<p>WATCH: Russian spy Maria Butina pleads guilty in US court<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;We are strongly concerned about the delay&#8221; in allowing him to sign the waiver, US embassy spokeswoman Andrea Kalan said. &#8220;Consular access without being able to do true consular support is not real access.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Russia&#8217;s foreign ministry brushed off speculation\u00a0that Whelan could be traded for Russian national Maria Butina, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/12\/russian-spy-maria-butina-pleads-guilty-court-181213160238361.html\">confessed in the US<\/a> in December to conspiring to act as an unregistered foreign agent.<\/p>\n<p><span>Whelan was detained two weeks after Butina confessed as part of a US plea deal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Exchanging Paul Whelan for someone held in custody abroad is out of the question at the current stage,&#8221; ministry\u00a0<span>spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Russian court has extended the detention of a former United States&#8217; marine charged with espionage until May 28, refusing a request that he be released under house arrest.
