{"id":32813,"date":"2019-02-22T06:15:26","date_gmt":"2019-02-22T06:15:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=32813"},"modified":"2019-02-22T06:15:26","modified_gmt":"2019-02-22T06:15:26","slug":"wallaces-giant-bee-worlds-largest-refound-by-scientists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=32813","title":{"rendered":"Wallace&#8217;s giant bee, world&#8217;s largest, refound by scientists"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"145.377697842\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">The world&#8217;s largest bee,\u00a0which had not been documented by scientists since 1981,\u00a0has been rediscovered by a team of conservationists and international researchers in a remote part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/indonesia.html\">Indonesia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The team found the first specimens of Megachile Pluto,\u00a0an insect <span>commonly known as Wallace&#8217;s giant bee that is\u00a0<\/span>roughly the size of a human thumb, in the archipelago&#8217;s North Moluccas islands last month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">On Thursday, they released images and video of a nest and its queen, saying their find was the &#8220;holy grail&#8221; of species discoveries.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Amid such a well-documented global decline in insect diversity, it&#8217;s wonderful to discover that this iconic species is still hanging on,&#8221; said Simon Robson, a member of the team and professor at the University of Sydney.<\/p>\n<p>Despite its conspicuous size, Wallace&#8217;s giant bee had not been observed in the wild since 1981, the Global Wildlife Conservation said. Several previous expeditions to the region where the bee lives failed to spot it.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\" readability=\"6.86468646865\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">BREAKING: Lost to science since 1981 and thought by some to be extinct, Wallace&#8217;s giant bee (Megachile pluto) has been rediscovered in Indonesia by an international team of scientists and conservationists. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/VoDp43LRG2\">pic.twitter.com\/VoDp43LRG2<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Australian Academy of Science (@Science_Academy) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Science_Academy\/status\/1098583368680099841?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 21, 2019<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The announcement reignites hope that more of the region&#8217;s forests may be home to this very rare species, said the team, which includes researchers from the University of Sydney, Saint Mary&#8217;s University in Canada and Princeton University in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Female specimens of the bee can reach a length of 3.8 centimetres and have a wingspan of more than six centimetres. Males grow to about 2.3 centimetres.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was absolutely breathtaking to see this &#8216;flying bulldog&#8217; of an insect that we weren&#8217;t sure existed anymore,&#8221; said Clay Bolt, a natural history photographer, who took the first photos and video of the giant bees alive.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To see how beautiful and big the species is in real life, to hear the sound of its giant wings thrumming as it flew past my head, was just incredible,&#8221; Bolt said. &#8220;My dream is to now use this rediscovery to elevate this bee to a symbol of conservation in this part of Indonesia.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"imagecontainer item\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/2\/22\/af3ba8a7eb3b471590355a027475787a_18.jpg\">\n<table class=\"image\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"2\">\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/2\/22\/af3ba8a7eb3b471590355a027475787a_18.jpg\" border=\"0\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"4\">\n<td class=\"caption\">A photomontage showing a living Wallace\u2019s giant bee (right), which is approximately four times larger than a European honeybee [Clay Bolt\/Global Wildlife Conservation\/AFP]<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The insect is named after British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace, who formulated the theory of evolution by natural selection before Charles Darwin&#8217;s published contributions.<\/p>\n<p>Wallace collected the species for the first time in 1858 while exploring the Indonesian island of Bacan.<\/p>\n<p>The bee was thought to be extinct until it was rediscovered in 1981 by Adam Messer, a US entomologist, who found six nests on the island of Bacan and two other nearby islands. It had not been seen again since.<\/p>\n<p>Eli Wyman, a researcher from Princeton University, said Messer&#8217;s find had given some insight, &#8220;but we still know next to nothing about this extraordinary insect&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I hope this rediscovery will spark research that will give us a deeper understanding of this unique bee and inform any future efforts to protect it from extinction,&#8221; Wyman said.<\/p>\n<p>Global Wildlife Conservation, a Texas-based non-profit organisation that runs a Search for Lost Species programme, put Wallace&#8217;s giant bee on its list of the &#8220;top 25 most wanted lost species&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers said forest destruction in Indonesia for agriculture, threatens the habitat for this species and many others.<\/p>\n<p>Between 2001 and 2017, Indonesia lost 15 percent of its tree cover, according to Global Forest Watch.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"32\">\n<p>\n            SOURCE:<br \/>\n            <span>Al Jazeera and news agencies<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The world&#8217;s largest bee,\u00a0which had not been documented by scientists since 1981,\u00a0has been rediscovered by a team of conservationists and international researchers in a remote part of Indonesia.
