{"id":32789,"date":"2019-02-21T22:34:44","date_gmt":"2019-02-21T22:34:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=32789"},"modified":"2019-02-21T22:34:44","modified_gmt":"2019-02-21T22:34:44","slug":"johnson-johnson-subpoenaed-about-baby-powder-cancer-claims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=32789","title":{"rendered":"Johnson &amp; Johnson subpoenaed about baby powder cancer claims"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"129.88086185\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">The US <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/Search\/?q=Justice%20Department\">Department of Justice<\/a>, the Securities and Exchange Commission and a senator have launched an investigation into drug-maker giant Johnson &#038; Johnson (J&#038;J), the company disclosed on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/200406\/000020040619000009\/form10-k20181230.htm\">its SEC filing<\/a>, J&#038;J wrote it received subpoenas from a number of federal agencies in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-states.html\">United States<\/a> following its failure to disclose alleged asbestos contamination in body powders, including their talc-based Baby Powder, and were asked to produce documents on the matter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">&#8220;The Company has received preliminary inquiries and subpoenas to produce documents regarding these matters from Senator Murray, a member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, the Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission,&#8221; J&#038;J said in its filing.<\/p>\n<p>J&#038;J said they were cooperating with the government inquiries and will be producing documents in response.<\/p>\n<p>The company reported it was involved in &#8220;numerous&#8221; product liability claims and lawsuits involving a number of its products. It said claimants are seeking &#8220;substantial&#8221; compensation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Personal injury claims alleging that talc causes cancer have been made against Johnson &#038; Johnson Consumer Inc and Johnson &#038; Johnson arising out of the use of body powders containing talc, primarily Johnson&#8217;s Baby Powder,&#8221; the company said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The number of pending product liability lawsuits continues to increase, and the Company continues to receive information with respect to potential costs and the anticipated number of cases,&#8221; it added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lawsuits have been primarily filed in state courts in Missouri, New Jersey and California, the company said.<\/p>\n<h2>Baby Powder cancer cases<\/h2>\n<p>There have more than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/12\/jj-stocks-plunge-report-firm-knew-asbestos-181214184354641.html\">10,000 cases<\/a>\u00a0that claim J&#038;J&#8217;s Baby Powder and Shower to Shower products cause ovarian cancer.<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to boost sales, the company is believed to have failed for decades to warn consumers that its talc-based products could cause cancer.<\/p>\n<p>The products have also been linked with mesothelioma, a rare and deadly form of cancer that affects the delicate tissue that lines body cavities.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, A Missouri <a href=\"http:\/\/america.aljazeera.com\/articles\/2016\/2\/24\/johnson-and-johnson-to-pay-72m-for-cancer-death-linked-to-talcum-powder.html\" target=\"_blank\">state jury ordered Johnson &#038; Johnson to pay<\/a> $72m in damages to the family of a woman whose death from ovarian cancer was linked to her use of the company&#8217;s Baby Powder and Shower to Shower feminine hygiene product for several decades.<\/p>\n<p>A year later, in 2017, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2017\/08\/johnson-johnson-pay-417m-cancer-lawsuit-170822140558316.html\">US jury ordered Johnson &#038; Johnson to pay<\/a> $417m to a woman who claimed she developed terminal ovarian cancer after using the company&#8217;s talc-based products.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/investigates\/special-report\/johnsonandjohnson-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\">Reuters investigation<\/a> last year found that J&#038;J had known about the presence of small amounts of asbestos in its products from as early as 1971.
