{"id":32708,"date":"2019-02-21T05:24:17","date_gmt":"2019-02-21T05:24:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=32708"},"modified":"2019-02-21T05:24:17","modified_gmt":"2019-02-21T05:24:17","slug":"ex-new-zealand-pm-jenny-shipley-denies-writing-china-op-ed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=32708","title":{"rendered":"Ex-New Zealand PM Jenny Shipley denies writing China op-ed"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"117.442273535\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Jenny Shipley, a former prime minister of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/new-zealand.html\">New Zealand<\/a>, has denied writing an article attributed to her by the official newspaper of China&#8217;s ruling communist party that complimented Beijing&#8217;s economic development at a time of heightened tensions between the two countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The first-person opinion piece &#8211; published under Shipley&#8217;s name on the website of the People&#8217;s Daily on Monday and headlined, We Need to Learn to Listen to China &#8211; had become its top-read English-language story by Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">&#8220;It is important for the foreign minister and prime minister and others to understand that I would never think of getting into a public situation like this, at such an important time for New Zealand&#8217;s relationship,&#8221; Shipley,\u00a0<span>who led the country as its first female prime minister from 1997 to 1999,<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/news\/article.cfm?c_id=1&#038;objectid=12205347\" target=\"_blank\">told<\/a>\u00a0the New Zealand Herald newspaper, adding that she had not been aware of the piece.<\/p>\n<p>Shipley, who is the chairwoman of the New Zealand subsidiary of China Construction Bank, said she had been interviewed by a Chinese newspaper in December for a feature article that had already been published, the New Zealand Herald said.<\/p>\n<p>An article with comments on topics similar to those in Monday&#8217;s piece ran last month on the website of China Daily, a separate state-run newspaper, but was couched in the third person and put Shipley&#8217;s comments in quotation marks.<\/p>\n<p>An appendix to the People&#8217;s Daily online article was changed on Wednesday from, &#8220;The author is former prime minister of New Zealand&#8221; to &#8220;Dame Jenny Shipley is former prime minister of New Zealand. The article is based on the interview by journalist with People&#8217;s Daily in December 2018.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The article drew criticism from Foreign Minister Winston Peters, who told Radio New Zealand on Wednesday that its timing was &#8220;very unwise&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h2>Strained ties<\/h2>\n<p>The article came amid a fierce spat between Wellington and Beijing over the inclusion of Huawei equipment in a planned 5G network.<\/p>\n<p>New Zealand intelligence agency GCSB has warned the\u00a0<span>Chinese technology giant&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span>involvement carries &#8220;significant security risks&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Australia and the United States have similarly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/12\/countries-banning-huawei-181206130850129.html\">moved to block the company&#8217;s 5G participation<\/a>\u00a0over fears the equipment could act as a backdoor for Chinese intelligence activities.<\/p>\n<p>Beijing has labelled such concerns as &#8220;groundless&#8221; and responded with a veiled warning to Chinese tourists not to visit New Zealand. <\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Tuesday appeared to be considering a compromise, saying talks were under way between GCSB and Spark (formerly Telecom New Zealand) to see if the fears about Huawei&#8217;s involvement could be addressed.<\/p>\n<p>She also sought to ease concerns the issue was becoming an irritant in relations with China, New Zealand&#8217;s largest trading partner, describing the two countries&#8217; relationship as complex but mature.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"32\">\n<p>\n            SOURCE:<br \/>\n            <span>Al Jazeera and news agencies<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jenny Shipley, a former prime minister of New Zealand, has denied writing an article attributed to her by the official newspaper of China&#8217;s ruling communist party that complimented Beijing&#8217;s economic development at a time of heightened tensions between the two countries.
