{"id":32603,"date":"2019-02-20T08:25:09","date_gmt":"2019-02-20T08:25:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=32603"},"modified":"2019-02-20T08:25:09","modified_gmt":"2019-02-20T08:25:09","slug":"taiwan-will-not-accept-any-deal-that-harms-democracy-tsai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=32603","title":{"rendered":"Taiwan will not accept any deal that harms democracy: Tsai"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"96.7596982759\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">President Tsai Ing-wen has said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/taiwan.html\">Taiwan<\/a> will not accept any deal that damages its sovereignty and democracy after the island&#8217;s China-friendly party said it might sign a peace agreement with Beijing if it won next year&#8217;s presidential elections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The Chinese government claims self-ruled Taiwan as its own and has vowed to bring it under its control &#8211; by force if necessary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/china.html\">China<\/a> has not broached the idea of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/01\/timeline-taiwan-china-relations-1949-190103011354919.html\">peace deal in years<\/a>, <span>Wu Den-yih,\u00a0<\/span>the chairman of the Beijing-friendly Kuomintang (KMT), said last week the party could sign a peace deal with China if it emerged victorious in the 2020 vote.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Taiwan society will not accept any treaty that harms Taiwan&#8217;s national sovereignty and democracy,&#8221; Tsai told reporters in Taipei on Wednesday, adding that there would not be real peace unless China ruled out using force to bring Taiwan under its control.<\/p>\n<p><span>Tsai&#8217;s Democratic Progressive Party,\u00a0<span>which wants to maintain the status quo,<\/span> suffered heavy losses to the KMT in mayoral and local elections in November.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Beijing was expected to make fresh overtures to the KMT before the upcoming polls, security sources in Taiwan&#8217;s government familiar with the matter told Reuters news agency, a move they said could isolate Tsai&#8217;s government and sway the result of the <span>hotly contested vote<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>China has stepped up pressure on Taiwan since Tsai took office in 2016, regularly sending military aircraft and ships to circle the island on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/01\/taiwan-announces-drill-tactics-counter-china-190109053540993.html\">drills <\/a>in the past few years.
