{"id":32541,"date":"2019-02-19T19:49:14","date_gmt":"2019-02-19T19:49:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=32541"},"modified":"2019-02-19T19:49:14","modified_gmt":"2019-02-19T19:49:14","slug":"daesh-defends-final-pocket-of-dying-caliphate-in-syria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=32541","title":{"rendered":"Daesh defends final pocket of dying \u2018caliphate\u2019 in Syria"},"content":{"rendered":"<div itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-io-article-url=\"http:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/1454266\/middle-east\" readability=\"160\">\n<p>\nOMAR\u00a0OIL\u00a0FIELD, Syria: Extremists defending their last dreg of territory in Syria have no choice but to surrender, a Kurdish-led force said on Monday, ahead of a victory declaration expected within days.<\/p>\n<p>The warning by the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) comes as EU foreign ministers are scheduled to meet Monday to discuss the repatriation of European nationals in Syria, which Germany said would be \u201cextremely difficult\u201d to do.<\/p>\n<p>Diehard extremist fighters are now trapped in their last patch of territory of less than half a square kilometer in the village of Baghouz near the Iraqi border.<\/p>\n<p>The SDF are moving cautiously on the extremist holdout, saying Daesh is increasingly using civilians as \u201chuman shields\u201d to block the advance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe clashes are sporadic and very limited,\u201d SDF spokesman Mustefa Bali told AFP on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo far there have been no significant changes on the ground,\u201d he said, adding that coalition warplanes have reduced air strikes on Daesh positions over the past two days.<\/p>\n<p>The SDF \u201care still working on trying to get civilians out,\u201d the spokesman said.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of people have streamed out of the so-called \u201cBaghouz pocket\u201d in recent weeks, but no civilians have made it out in the last three days.<\/p>\n<p>An informed source told AFP that holdout Daesh fighters are seeking safe passage to the extremist-held city of Idlib in northwestern Syria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey want to take the remaining civilians with them as human shields. But the SDF are not willing to discuss this option,\u201d said the source who asked not to be named.<\/p>\n<p>The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based war monitor, said the SDF have turned down the request.<\/p>\n<p>AFP could not confirm this with an SDF official, but a commander with the alliance said that Daesh has no leverage to negotiate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are besieged in a very tight area and they have no other choice but to surrender,\u201d said the SDF commander, who asked not to be named.<\/p>\n<p>The group declared a \u201ccaliphate\u201d across large swathes of Syria and neighboring Iraq in 2014, which at its height spanned an area the size of United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>Successive offensives in both countries have since shattered the proto-state, but the extremist group still retains a presence in Syria\u2019s vast Badia desert and has claimed deadly attacks in SDF-held territory.<\/p>\n<p>After years of fighting Daesh, the Kurdish-led SDF hold hundreds of foreign suspected Daesh fighters, as well as related women and children.<\/p>\n<p>Syria\u2019s Kurds have long urged their home countries to take them back, but these nations have been reluctant.<\/p>\n<p>The issue has taken on greater urgency, however, amid fears of a security vacuum since US President Donald Trump\u2019s shock announcement in December that American troops would withdraw.<\/p>\n<p>The subject is to be raised on Monday at a meeting of European foreign ministers called to discuss among other issues \u201cthe situation in Syria, in particular the recent developments on the ground,\u201d according to an agenda for the talks.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting comes after Trump on Sunday called on his European allies to take back their citizens who are being held by the Kurds in Syria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States is asking Britain, France, Germany and other European allies to take back over 800 Daesh fighters that we captured in Syria and put them on trial,\u201d Trump said in a tweet.<\/p>\n<p>His appeal sparked a reaction from Berlin, Paris, and Brussels.<\/p>\n<p>Germany\u2019s Foreign Minister Heiko Maas warned that it would be \u201cextremely difficult\u201d to organize the repatriation of European nationals from Syria.<\/p>\n<p>A return could only be possible if \u201cwe can guarantee that these people can be immediately sent here to appear in court and that they will be detained,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Germany\u2019s Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen stressed the difficulties however of putting the ex-fighters on trial.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must be able to ensure that prosecution is possible,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\nFrench junior interior minister Laurent Nunez said Sunday that, if suspected extremists return, \u201cthey will all be tried, and incarcerated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Belgium, justice minister Koen Geens called for a collective \u201cEuropean solution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a top Kurdish official called on Europe not to abandon Syrian Kurds.<\/p>\n<p>European powers \u201chave a political and moral responsibility\u201d to the Kurds, Aldar Khalil told AFP in an interview in Paris late Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The Kurds would seek the protection of Syrian President Bashar Assad if failed by Europe and the United States, he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OMAR\u00a0OIL\u00a0FIELD, Syria: Extremists defending their last dreg of territory in Syria have no choice but to surrender, a Kurdish-led force said on Monday, ahead of a victory declaration expected within days.
