{"id":32393,"date":"2019-02-09T00:22:47","date_gmt":"2019-02-09T00:22:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=32393"},"modified":"2019-02-09T00:22:47","modified_gmt":"2019-02-09T00:22:47","slug":"fourth-man-found-guilty-in-charlottesville-beating-of-black-man","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=32393","title":{"rendered":"Fourth man found guilty in Charlottesville beating of black man"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"128.091236495\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">A court has found guilty a fourth man guilty of a brutal attack on a 20-year-old African American during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2017\/08\/unite-white-supremacists-rally-virginia-170812142356688.html\">deadly white nationalist<\/a> rally in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/features\/2017\/08\/alt-rally-charlottesville-braces-violence-170810073156023.html\">Charlottesville,<\/a> Virginia, in August 2017.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">On Friday, 50-year-old Tyler Watkins Davis appeared in the Charlottesville Circuit Court and entered an Alford plea,\u00a0<span>the local NBC affiliate, WVIR NBC29, reported.\u00a0<\/span> As part of a the plea, a defendant does not admit guilt, but admits there is sufficient evidence to convict him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">According to the local media outlet, Davis admits the incident took place but disputes the malice part.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities issued Davis the charge after a group of white nationalists attacked DeAndre Harris inside a parking garage during &#8220;Unite the Right&#8221;, held on August 12, 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The gathering was one of the largest US white nationalist rallies in recent decades.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Davis was a member of the League of the South, a neo-Confederate group that was highly active in far-right violence in recent years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pictures and a video of Harris&#8217;s attack by a group of white nationalists were shared widely online, leading to attempts to identify the perpetrators.<\/p>\n<p>Harris suffered a spinal injury, a broken arm and a gash in his skull that that required staples.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the Washington Post, Davis was responsible for the head injury that resulted in staples.<\/p>\n<h2>Convictions<\/h2>\n<p>Including Davis, four men were arrested and convicted for the attack on Harris. The previous three were convicted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Daniel Borden was ordered to serve three years and 10 months. During the violence, he was photographed wearing a helmet that read &#8220;commie killer&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And in August 2018, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/08\/prison-sentences-beating-black-man-charlottesville-rally-180824064043631.html\">Jacob Scott Goodwin and Alex Ramos<\/a> were sentenced to eight and six years respectively for their role in attacking Harris.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the alt-right rally, white nationalists, neo-Nazis and white supremacists attacked and clashed with community members, anti-fascists and anti-racist activists across Charlottesville.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Unite the Right turned deadly when a driver rammed his vehicle into a crowd of anti-racist protesters, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer and injuring dozens of others.<\/p>\n<p>James Alex Fields Jr, who was photographed marching with a neo-Nazi group earlier in the day, has since been charged with a slew of crimes, including federal hate crimes.<\/p>\n<p>The alt-right is a loosely knit movement including white nationalists, white supremacists and neo-Nazis, among others.
