{"id":32002,"date":"2019-02-06T00:23:20","date_gmt":"2019-02-06T00:23:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=32002"},"modified":"2019-02-06T00:23:20","modified_gmt":"2019-02-06T00:23:20","slug":"sudan-minister-appeals-to-youth-as-protests-continue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=32002","title":{"rendered":"Sudan minister appeals to youth as protests continue"},"content":{"rendered":"<div itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-io-article-url=\"http:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/1447641\/middle-east\" readability=\"87\">\n<p>\nKHARTOUM: Sudan\u2019s defense minister said on Monday that young people caught up in recent turmoil had \u201creasonable ambition,\u201d the second apparently conciliatory gesture in three days from a senior government figure.<\/p>\n<p>\nStudents, activists and other protesters frustrated with economic hardships have held almost daily demonstrations across Sudan since Dec. 19, mounting the most sustained challenge to President Omar Al-Bashir\u2019s three decades in power.<\/p>\n<p>\nDefense Minister Awad Mohamed Ahmed Ibn Auf did not directly address the protesters\u2019 concerns, but said the situation in the country showed a schism between young and old.<\/p>\n<p>\nThat, he added, \u201crequires intergenerational communication and fair solutions to youth problems and realizing their reasonable ambition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\nRecent events \u201cshowed the need to reshape political entities, parties and armed movements of the political scene with a different mindset than before,\u201d he said during a briefing with military officers, according to a ministry statement.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" height=\"230\" src=\"http:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/sites\/default\/files\/userimages\/17\/untitled-1_copy_88.png\" width=\"238\">The minister did not spell out what kind of reshaping should take place and there was no immediate response from opposition parties, which have backed the demonstrations.<\/p>\n<p>\nPolice dispersed dozens of protesters in the Shambat neighborhood of Khartoum on Monday and dozens more across the Nile in Omdurman, the capital\u2019s twin city, witnesses said.<\/p>\n<p>\nPeople have taken to the streets across Sudan, frustrated with price hikes and shortages in cash, bread, petrol and other essentials, calling for Al-Bashir to go. Many have echoed slogans used in the Muslim world\u2019s \u201cArab Spring\u201d uprisings.<\/p>\n<p>\nRights groups say at least 45 people have been killed during clashes with security services, while the government puts the death toll at 30, including two security personnel.<\/p>\n<p>\nAl-Bashir has shown no sign of being prepared to concede any power and has blamed the protests on foreign agents, challenging his rivals to seek power through the ballot box.<\/p>\n<p>\nBut Prime Minister Moataz Moussa on Saturday appeared to soften the official stance on the protests, describing demonstrators\u2019 calls for better living conditions as \u201clegitimate.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KHARTOUM: Sudan\u2019s defense minister said on Monday that young people caught up in recent turmoil had \u201creasonable ambition,\u201d the second apparently conciliatory gesture in three days from a senior government figure.
