{"id":31947,"date":"2019-02-05T18:22:25","date_gmt":"2019-02-05T18:22:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=31947"},"modified":"2019-02-05T18:22:25","modified_gmt":"2019-02-05T18:22:25","slug":"sudan-police-fire-tear-gas-as-protesters-denounce-teachers-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=31947","title":{"rendered":"Sudan police fire tear gas as protesters denounce teacher&#8217;s death"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"142\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Teachers, lawyers, doctors and pharmacists took to the streets of Khartoum\u00a0 and other parts of the country on Tuesday as protests continue against President Omar al-Bashir&#8217;s rule.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Sudanese police fired tear gas at hundreds of teachers near the education ministry protesting the death of a colleague in detention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Some demonstrators chanted &#8220;freedom, peace, justice,&#8221; &#8211; the rallying cry of the protest movement against Bashir&#8217;s government.<\/p>\n<div data-embed-type=\"Brightcove\" data-embed-id=\"5994991359001\">\n<table class=\"in-article-item video\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td readability=\"5\">\n<p>How bread has emerged as the main symbol of Sudan unrest<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- PAGELOADEDSUCCESSFULLY-->Ahmed al-Kheir, a 36-year-old teacher and member of the Islamist Popular Congress Party (PCP), died in detention after security agents arrested him last week in connection to the protests, a relative told AFP on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Many were carrying photographs of Kheir who died in detention,&#8221; the witness added.<\/p>\n<p>Kheir was a member of the PCP, which is part of Bashir&#8217;s government but has called for a probe into the deaths of protesters killed during the rallies.<\/p>\n<p>Groups of doctors, students and lawyers also staged demonstrations in the capital and other areas of the country.<\/p>\n<p>A government decision to triple the price of bread in December sparked initial protests which have spread across Sudan.<\/p>\n<p>Unrest quickly escalated into nationwide rallies against Bashir&#8217;s three-decades in power, with demonstrators demanding the veteran leader step down.<\/p>\n<p>Officials say 30 people have died in protest-related violence since then, but Human Rights Watch says at least 51 people have been killed.<\/p>\n<h2>More protests in Khartoum<\/h2>\n<p>Police on Tuesday also fired tear gas at a separate demonstration held by graduates of Khartoum University, witnesses said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The students were trying to stage a march, but they were dispersed with tear gas,&#8221; a witness said.<\/p>\n<div data-embed-type=\"Brightcove\" data-embed-id=\"5995237285001\">\n<table class=\"in-article-item video\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td readability=\"5\">\n<p>Bashir says Sudan protesters trying to emulate Arab Spring<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- PAGELOADEDSUCCESSFULLY-->Hundreds of doctors held sit-ins in several hospitals across the country calling on Bashir to step down, witnesses said.<\/p>\n<p>Video footage uploaded onto social media showed doctors holding banners calling for Bashir&#8217;s resignation.<\/p>\n<p>About 200 lawyers held a separate march in Khartoum, but is was swiftly broken up with tear gas, a lawyer said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We wanted to give a petition to the chief of the judiciary that calls for freedom of speech and the release of detainees,&#8221; he told AFP on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But riot police fired tear gas at us, after which we had to disperse.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Amid calls for him to resign, Bashir has remained defiant, addressing loyalists at several rallies across the country and seeking support from regional allies.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, he held three gatherings in the state of North Kordofan where he pledged to bolster rural growth by undertaking new infrastructure projects.<\/p>\n<p>Bashir and other senior Sudanese officials have repeatedly said the government can only be changed through elections.<\/p>\n<p>The veteran leader, who came to power following a coup in 1989, is considering running for a third presidential term in polls due next year.<\/p>\n<div data-embed-type=\"Brightcove\" data-embed-id=\"5991649264001\">\n<table class=\"in-article-item video Fullwidth\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td readability=\"5\">\n<p>Can Sudan&#8217;s protests succeed?
