{"id":31941,"date":"2019-02-05T18:22:09","date_gmt":"2019-02-05T18:22:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=31941"},"modified":"2019-02-05T18:22:09","modified_gmt":"2019-02-05T18:22:09","slug":"british-man-detained-in-uae-after-wearing-qatar-football-shirt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=31941","title":{"rendered":"British man &#8216;detained&#8217; in UAE after wearing Qatar football shirt"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"137.622641509\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">A British man has been arrested and detained in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-arab-emirates.html\">United Arab Emirates<\/a> after he wore a Qatar football team shirt during a match at the AFC Asian Cup, according to a UK media report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Ali Issa Ahmad, 26, was detained and beaten up for wearing a football shirt which promoted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/qatar.html\">Qatar<\/a> at the team&#8217;s group match against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/iraq.html\">Iraq<\/a> in the capital, Abu Dhabi, on January 22, the Guardian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/feb\/05\/british-man-detained-in-uae-after-wearing-qatar-football-t-shirt-to-match\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Showing sympathy for Qatar is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2017\/06\/uae-social-media-users-face-jail-qatar-sympathy-170607053416087.html\">punishable<\/a> in the UAE, with a jail term of up to 15 years.<\/p>\n<p>The sanctions were imposed after the Emirati state, along with Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2017\/06\/qatar-diplomatic-crisis-latest-updates-170605105550769.html\">severed<\/a> diplomatic and trade ties with Qatar, accusing the Gulf state of supporting &#8220;terrorism&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Doha has repeatedly and vehemently denied the allegations.<\/p>\n<p>Ahmad, from Wolverhampton in central England and an Arsenal fan, was in the UAE on holiday when he attended the tournament match, his friend Amer Lokie, told the Guardian.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is just unspeakable,&#8221;\u00a0<span>Lokie was quoted as saying about the detention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It seems that he was released after being detained, assaulted by the security men in the car and accused of promoting Qatar.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to Lokie, who spoke to Ahmad on the phone, as he begged for help to get released, his friend was again detained and accused of telling lies after he went to the police station to report his initial assault.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re not clear about exactly what happened next but he has been held because he is accused of making false allegations against UAE security officials,&#8221; Lokie said. &#8220;He said he is being held in a place called Al Sharjar.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-cards=\"hidden\" data-lang=\"en\" readability=\"5.90963855422\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/UAE?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#UAE<\/a> just arrested a British man for wearing a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Qatar?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Qatar<\/a> football jersey. <\/p>\n<p>Taking out their bitterness over <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/AsiaCup2019?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#AsiaCup2019<\/a> on foreign nat&#8217;ls? Meanwhile, UK&#8217;s Foreign and Commonwealth Office said it was &#8220;providing assistance&#8221; and was &#8220;in touch with the local authorities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;I am in shock that he was arrested and assaulted because of the football T-shirt he was wearing,&#8221; Lokie added. &#8220;We are all so worried about him. This is very serious.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Controversial Cup\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Asian Cup was played in the UAE between January 5 and February 1.<\/p>\n<p>Qatar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/02\/qatar-stun-japan-lift-maiden-asian-cup-title-190201151119965.html\">won<\/a> its maiden title after defeating four-time winner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/japan.html\">Japan<\/a> 3-1 in the final on Friday.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-cards=\"hidden\" data-lang=\"en\" readability=\"7.19343065693\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/UAE?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#UAE<\/a> it is an offence to show sympathy to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Qatar?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Qatar<\/a>, a country it blockades.
