{"id":31873,"date":"2019-02-05T07:23:08","date_gmt":"2019-02-05T07:23:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=31873"},"modified":"2019-02-05T07:23:08","modified_gmt":"2019-02-05T07:23:08","slug":"dutch-boxing-hero-who-fought-ali-still-riding-punches-in-bulgaria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=31873","title":{"rendered":"Dutch boxing hero who fought Ali still riding punches in Bulgaria"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-140415133408172\" readability=\"143.036144578\">\n<p>Former Dutch boxing champion Rudi Lubbers, who lost to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/muhammad-ali.html\">Muhammad Ali<\/a> on points in a 12-round heavyweight fight in Jakarta four and a half decades ago, is back on his feet after taking one of the heaviest punches of his life.<\/p>\n<p>The 73-year-old and his partner Ria have been living in poverty in southeastern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/bulgaria.html\">Bulgaria<\/a> for the last two months, only to receive help after his story grabbed huge attention in the Netherlands following a TV documentary shown last Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>They survived the freezing conditions in a broken-down van, lacking electricity, water and sanitary facilities, while looking after stray dogs.<\/p>\n<p>Ria&#8217;s health suddenly deteriorated to the point she was rushed to hospital on Friday in critical condition.<\/p>\n<p>Lubbers said her condition had improved slightly but she would remain in hospital for a few more days at least.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The most important [thing] now is that my girlfriend returns in good condition and can see the dogs again,&#8221; he said, adding that he and Ria had received food and clothes from local people as well as Bulgarian mastika, a strong anise-flavoured drink, to keep them warm in the freeze.<\/p>\n<p>Many in the Netherlands were shocked to see their boxing hero in such a desperate situation to the point that more than 12,500 euro were collected following the launch a crowd-funding campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Rudi&#8217;s son Marco, who hasn&#8217;t been in touch with his dad for two years, arrived in Bulgaria after watching the documentary while Dutch people, living in the Balkan country, arranged a temporary shelter for the dogs.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"imagecontainer item\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/2\/5\/11c85c1d1f9e4464a8c17e12c45436d5_18.jpg\">\n<table class=\"image\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1\">\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/2\/5\/11c85c1d1f9e4464a8c17e12c45436d5_18.jpg\" border=\"0\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"2\">\n<td class=\"caption\">Lubbers represented the Netherlands at the 1964 and 1968 Olympic Games [Reuters\/Stoyan Nenov]<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Lubbers worked at funfairs with Ria for several years after retiring, but became homeless after she was declared bankrupt in 1999.<\/p>\n<p>They lived then in Lebanon, Morocco, Egypt, United Arab Emirates and Portugal before arriving in Bulgaria a few years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Lubbers said he had remained friends with Ali who fought him in 1973 as he prepared for a rematch with his great rival Joe Frazier.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Years after the fight, he [Ali] came to Holland,&#8221; said Lubbers who revealed that Ali had told him something he would remember forever.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ali told me: &#8216;Rudi, you&#8217;re the only white man from whom I ever learned something&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Lubbers, never beaten by a Dutch opponent during his career, said he still watched boxing but was disappointed by modern techniques.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I love boxing but boxing has changed,&#8221;
