{"id":31849,"date":"2019-02-05T03:23:22","date_gmt":"2019-02-05T03:23:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=31849"},"modified":"2019-02-05T03:23:22","modified_gmt":"2019-02-05T03:23:22","slug":"arab-women-take-active-role-in-promoting-tolerance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=31849","title":{"rendered":"Arab women take active role in promoting tolerance"},"content":{"rendered":"<div itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-io-article-url=\"http:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/1447206\/middle-east\" readability=\"106\">\n<p>\nDUBAI: Arab women will play an important role in the pursuit of tolerance in the region, as more of them find roles in the education sector, a senior official at the Organization of Arab Women (OAW) has said.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cWomen and men are all together, having active roles toward the pursuit of tolerance,\u201d Dr. Fadia Kiwan, Director General at OAW, told Arab News on the sidelines of the Global Conference of Human Fraternity on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\nKiwan underscored the prominent role of women in education \u2014 from guiding children through their formative years to being professional educators in schools, which she said is crucial in \u201cteaching tolerance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cWe see women in active roles in producing and transmitting values,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\nBut women are not just taking the lead in education, according to Kiwan, who herself was an established professor of political science in Beirut.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cWe have a moving situation in the Arab world,\u201d Kiwan said, singling out Tunisia as a country that \u201cis taking the lead in many different fields.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cOther Arab countries are taking measures too. Most governments are making efforts toward creating policies that are women-friendly \u2014 such as nominating women to key government positions and allocating funds to address women\u2019s issues,\u201d she said, making special mention of the recent move by Saudi Arabia to allow women to drive.<\/p>\n<p>\nAlthough the Arab world \u201chas made a lot of efforts in the past decade,\u201d Kiwan admitted that there are still some obvious gaps that need to be addressed.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cThe results are not the same in each country. These discrepancies can be explained by the differences in terms of wealth and stability. Some Arab countries live in war,\u201d she said, adding that the organization is currently prioritizing victims of regional conflicts.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cThere are millions of people who are out of their homes because of wars.
