{"id":31777,"date":"2019-02-04T16:23:10","date_gmt":"2019-02-04T16:23:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=31777"},"modified":"2019-02-04T16:23:10","modified_gmt":"2019-02-04T16:23:10","slug":"eu-tech-giants-responding-faster-to-hate-speech-online","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=31777","title":{"rendered":"EU: Tech giants responding faster to hate speech online"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"120.02189781\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Major <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/subjects\/social-media.html\">social media<\/a> companies have more than doubled the rate at which they fight hate speech online,\u00a0stepping up their efforts since they joined the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/european-union.html\">European Union<\/a>&#8216;s voluntary approach in 2016, EU officials said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span>Internet giants like\u00a0<\/span>YouTube, Microsoft, Twitter and Facebook are now assessing 89 percent of flagged content within 24 hours and removing 72 percent of the content deemed illegal, the officials said on Monday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The figures compare with 40 percent and 28 percent respectively when the firms signed up to a code of conduct in 2016, according to officials with the European Commission, the EU&#8217;s executive arm.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The results show that the platforms have taken their obligations seriously,&#8221; the EU&#8217;s justice and consumer affairs commissioner Vera Jourova told a press conference in the Belgian capital, Brussels.<\/p>\n<p>Jourova said, together with the companies, &#8220;we found the right approach&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The EU joined forces with the US-based internet firms nearly three years ago amid growing alarm in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/regions\/europe.html\">Europe<\/a> over the use of social media as a recruiting tool, especially by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/isis-isil.html\">ISIL<\/a>, also known as ISIS) group.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The founding participants were YouTube, Microsoft, Twitter and Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Instagram, Google+, Snapchat and Dailymotion had joined the effort.<\/p>\n<p>Jourova said French gaming platform jeuxvideos.com also announced its participation on Monday.<\/p>\n<p><span>The EU statistics show that YouTube removed 85.4 percent of contested content, Facebook 82.4 percent and Twitter 43.5 percent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But the Czech commissioner warned: &#8220;Good results don&#8217;t mean companies are off the hook.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Jourova urged the internet companies to improve feedback to users as well as providing more transparency on notices and removals.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the progress on hate speech, the EU still wants big tech companies to work harder to combat fake news online, particularly ahead of the European Parliament election in May.<\/p>\n<p>Jourova recommended continuing with the voluntary approach after the latest commission review, but said Brussels reserved the right to resort to regulation if needed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The fight against illegal hate speech online is not over,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Facebook said it was\u00a0using tools to automatically detect hate speech and hiring more Burmese-language speakers to review posts, after acknowledging it had\u00a0been &#8220;too slow&#8221;
