{"id":31723,"date":"2019-02-04T06:23:16","date_gmt":"2019-02-04T06:23:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=31723"},"modified":"2019-02-04T06:23:16","modified_gmt":"2019-02-04T06:23:16","slug":"arab-league-chief-combat-hate-by-teaching-children-inclusivity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=31723","title":{"rendered":"Arab League chief: Combat hate by teaching children inclusivity"},"content":{"rendered":"<div itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-io-article-url=\"http:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/1446591\/middle-east\" readability=\"111\">\n<p>\nABU DHABI: The growing level of intolerance in the world needs to be combatted by teaching children to be more inclusive, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\nSpeaking at the Human Fraternity Conference in the UAE capital Abu Dhabi, Aboul Gheit said the conference was happening \u201cin the right place at the right time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\nHe added: \u201cThere is no more important value today than tolerance, as sectarianism and racism rear their ugly heads all over the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\nExtremism and hatred are expressed mostly through religion and politics, resulting in wars that have \u201cnothing to do with religion,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\nAboul Gheit suggested introducing the concept of tolerance in school curriculums. \u201cWe must grow up learning about and from other religions and faiths to raise our understanding,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe Human Fraternity Conference marks the start of the UAE\u2019s \u201cYear of Tolerance,\u201d which is aimed at promoting dialogue between nations and faiths.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe visit by Pope Francis, who arrived in Abu Dhabi on Sunday night, is the first by a pontiff in the Arabian Peninsula.<\/p>\n<p>\nIn his opening remarks, Emirati Minister of Tolerance Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al-Nahyan said the pope\u2019s involvement in the conference was a true reflection of the \u201cpower of tolerance and human fraternity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\nAl-Nayhan added: \u201cIt is my aspiration that this conference and its outcomes will be known as a landmark event improving global relations.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\nThe pope and Al-Azhar\u2019s Grand Imam Sheikh Ahmad El-Tayeb \u201care global forces for compassion and peace,\u201d said Al-Nahyan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cTheir participation in this conference speaks eloquently on the power of tolerance and human fraternity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\nHe said the conference was a multicultural event that encouraged compassion, respect and understanding among different communities, cultures and religions.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cThe gathering enables us to counter extremism, prejudice, hate, aggression, greed and oppression that violate the very idea of human fraternity,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\nIt is necessary to combat \u201cthe destructive forces of extremism, terrorism, poverty, degradation of women, environmental abuse, illiteracy and prejudice,\u201d Al-Nahyan said.<\/p>\n<p>\nSpeaking at a press conference later, Dr. Sultan Faisal Al-Remeithi, secretary-general of the Muslim Council of Elders, said the event included more than 10 religious sects.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cIt (the conference) carries a real message about peace in the world by introducing a concept that all of us are keen to implement,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe pope\u2019s visit falls under the UAE\u2019s strategy of being a country that hosts 200 nationalities and a multitude of faiths and beliefs, Al-Remeithi added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ABU DHABI: The growing level of intolerance in the world needs to be combatted by teaching children to be more inclusive, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said on Sunday.
