{"id":31074,"date":"2019-01-29T22:23:24","date_gmt":"2019-01-29T22:23:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=31074"},"modified":"2019-01-29T22:23:24","modified_gmt":"2019-01-29T22:23:24","slug":"sudan-intelligence-chief-orders-release-of-protest-detainees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=31074","title":{"rendered":"Sudan intelligence chief orders release of protest detainees"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"145.431137725\">\n<p class=\"speakable\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/sudan.html\">Sudan<\/a>&#8216;s intelligence chief has ordered the release of all detainees held during the weeklong protests that rocked the North African country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span><span>Tuesday&#8217;s announcement came amid increasing international criticism of Khartoum&#8217;s handling of the ongoing demonstrations.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span>&#8220;The chief of the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) issued an order to release all detainees held in recent incidents,&#8221; the information ministry reported Salah Ghosh as saying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The protests, which began on December 19 after the government decided to triple the price of bread, have since turned into a nation-wide movement calling for President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/omar-bashir.html\">Omar al-Bashir<\/a> to step down.<\/p>\n<p><span>Rights groups say NISS arrested more than 1,000 people, including protesters, opposition leaders, activists and journalists, as part of its clampdown.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Officials say 30 people have died in violence during the protests, but rights groups have put the death toll at more than 40.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Mourning turns into demo\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>On Tuesday, hundreds of protesters turned up in and around the capital Khartoum, marching in memorial for those killed in past protests and reiterating their calls for Bashir&#8217;s ouster.<\/p>\n<p>Bashir, who took power in a 1989 coup, has said any change of leadership could only come through the ballot box. The 75-year-old leader is expected to run for another term in office next year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The demonstration, called by unions and opposition activists fell on the anniversary of the 2005 killing of protesters in Port Sudan during an earlier period of popular upheaval.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div data-embed-type=\"Brightcove\" data-embed-id=\"5994991359001\">\n<table class=\"in-article-item video\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td readability=\"5\">\n<p>WATCH: How bread emerged as the main symbol of Sudan unrest (03:42)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p>In ensuing clashes with government forces, 21 demonstrators were killed, according to activists. Since then, every year on January 29, Beja tribesmen mark the deaths with a sit-in at Port Sudan.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This sit-in is not just to mourn the 2005 deaths, but also to mourn the deaths of those who have died in the uprising since December,&#8221; Beja activist Abdallah Mussa told AFP news agency from Port Sudan.<\/p>\n<p>The opposition Umma Party said in a statement that security forces surrounded its building in Omdurman and arrested several employees. It denounced the move but said it would not be dissuaded from &#8220;working to overthrow the regime and build a new Sudan&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h2>&#8216;Credible and independent investigation&#8217;\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Meanwhile, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-states.html\">United States<\/a> has warned that Sudan&#8217;s response to the protests might impact ties between the two countries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the US expressed concern &#8220;about the increasing number of arrests and detentions&#8221; and urged Khartoum to free &#8220;all journalists, activists and peaceful protesters who have been arbitrarily detained&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We also call on the government to allow for a credible and independent investigation into the deaths and injuries to protesters,&#8221; said State Department spokesperson Robert Palladino.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The US has been slowly mending relations with Sudan after decades of tension, including over the presence of late <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/al-qaeda.html\">Al-Qaeda<\/a> chief <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/asia\/2011\/05\/20115235148217423.html\">Osama bin Laden<\/a> in the country in the 1990s and a military campaign in the western region of Darfur that Washington described as genocide.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-kingdom.html\">Britain<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/canada.html\">Canada<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/norway.html\">Norway<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/un.html\">United Nations<\/a> have also criticised the crackdown, along with rights groups.<\/p>\n<p><span>For years, anger has been mounting across Sudan over growing economic hardships and deteriorating living conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Bashir has blamed the country&#8217;s economic woes on Washington that had imposed a trade embargo on Khartoum in 1997.<\/p>\n<p><span>Washington lifted the embargo in October 2017, but that has failed to revive the country&#8217;s economy hit by soaring inflation and an acute foreign currency shortage.<\/span><\/p>\n<div data-embed-type=\"Brightcove\" data-embed-id=\"5982859770001\">\n<table class=\"in-article-item video Fullwidth\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td readability=\"5\">\n<p>WATCH: Will Omar Al Bashir survive the protests?
