{"id":31064,"date":"2019-01-29T19:22:31","date_gmt":"2019-01-29T19:22:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=31064"},"modified":"2019-01-29T19:22:31","modified_gmt":"2019-01-29T19:22:31","slug":"venezuela-prosecutor-moves-to-place-travel-ban-on-guaido","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=31064","title":{"rendered":"Venezuela prosecutor moves to place travel ban on Guaido"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"173.298808655\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Venezuela&#8217;s chief prosecutor has asked the Supreme Court to place a travel ban on\u00a0<span>self-proclaimed interim president\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/01\/profile-juan-guaido-venezuela-declared-interim-leader-190124052507068.html\">Juan Guaido<\/a><span>, as well to freeze the opposition leader&#8217;s accounts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-states.html\">United States<\/a>, along with several other countries, have recognised Guaido as Venezuela&#8217;s legitimate head of state and denounced leftist President Nicolas Maduro as a usurper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Maduro, sworn in earlier this month for a second term after last year&#8217;s disputed elections, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/01\/venezuela-crisis-latest-updates-190123205835912.html\">accuses Guaido of staging a US-directed coup<\/a> against him.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Attorney General Tarek Saab said on state television he asked the court &#8220;to open a preliminary investigation into Guaido as a result of diverse violent occurrences provoked in this country since January 22&#8221; &#8211; the day before Guaido named himself president.<\/p>\n<p>Saab also accused Guaido of helping countries interfere in Venezuela&#8217;s internal matters.<\/p>\n<p>As a legislator who also heads the National Assembly, Guaido has immunity from criminal investigation that can be removed only by the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>Minutes after the announcement, Guaido said he was not underestimating a threat of imprisonment but did not believe it was &#8220;anything new&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are here, we will keep acting and working to confront the humanitarian crisis,&#8221; he told a news conference in Caracas.<\/p>\n<h2>Protests and turmoil\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>The US, Brazil, <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/canada.html\">Canada<\/a>, Colombia, Argentina, <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/peru.html\">Peru<\/a>, Ecuador and Paraguay have officially acknowledged Guaido as the legitimate interim head of Venezuela, while Russia, Iran, Turkey and China, among many other countries, back Maduro.<\/p>\n<p>Inside Venezuela, Maduro holds the reins with the armed forces still loyal to him despite an opposition push to gain their support by proposing amnesty for anybody who supports Guaido&#8217;s transitional government.<\/p>\n<p>Maduro has accused the US of leading an open coup against him to exploit Venezuela&#8217;s oil reserves, the largest in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Some analysts agree with the government&#8217;s view.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[The White House is attempting to oust President Maduro for] the same reason there were some intents on ousting president Chavez in 2002 or Maduro in 2014,&#8221;\u00a0<span>Peter Dobson, a Venezuelan political analyst, told Al Jazeera.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One simple word: Oil. The control of the oil resources in Venezuela, as well as the diamonds, gold, water, gas and a whole range of natural resources, is massively important for the US, and [their] geostrategic interests across the world,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/01\/juan-guaido-control-venezuelan-assets-190129160213052.html\">signed off on the order<\/a>\u00a0for Guaido to control holdings in the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and federally insured banks, the State Department said.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, US President Donald Trump&#8217;s administration also announced sanctions against Venezuela&#8217;s state oil company PDVSA.<\/p>\n<p>The move is expected to block $7bn in assets and result in $11bn of lost export revenue over the next year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If the only source of [foreign] income comes from PDVSA, with these new measures, the income will decline. This will imply that the supply of dollars will decrease and the demand will be maintained,&#8221;\u00a0<span>Carlos Eduardo Pina, a Venezuelan political scientist, told Al Jazeera.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This will mean the exchange rate will increase a lot more, leading to inflation. If measures are not taken soon, inflation will continue to rise, generating a great discontent among the population,&#8221; Pina added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Russian Deputy Finance Minister Sergei Storchak told Russian state news agencies that &#8220;there will probably be problems&#8221; for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/venezuela.html\">Venezuela<\/a> in paying its debts.<\/p>\n<p>Storchak said Venezuela owes Russia $3bn, with repayments twice a year of around $100m.<\/p>\n<p>China has also loaned Venezuela more than $50bn through oil-for-loan agreements over the past decade, securing energy supplies for its fast-growing economy.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, China&#8217;s foreign ministry criticised the US sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Experience has proven that external interference or sanctions will only complicate the situation and will not help solve practical problems,&#8221; foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said at a regular media briefing on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Venezuela&#8217;s chief prosecutor has asked the Supreme Court to place a travel ban on\u00a0self-proclaimed interim president\u00a0Juan Guaido, as well to freeze the opposition leader&#8217;s accounts.
