{"id":31056,"date":"2019-01-29T19:22:11","date_gmt":"2019-01-29T19:22:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=31056"},"modified":"2019-01-29T19:22:11","modified_gmt":"2019-01-29T19:22:11","slug":"poroshenko-announces-bid-for-second-term-as-ukraines-president","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=31056","title":{"rendered":"Poroshenko announces bid for second term as Ukraine&#8217;s president"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"111.672321429\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Ukraine&#8217;s President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/petro-poroshenko.html\">Petro Poroshenko<\/a>\u00a0will run for a second term in office in the upcoming elections scheduled to take place in April.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The 53-year-old, a confectionary magnate and one of Ukraine&#8217;s richest men, told thousands of supporters that one of his main priorities would be for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/ukraine.html\">Ukraine<\/a> to join the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/european-union.html\">European Union<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">&#8220;The feeling of deep responsibility before the country, before contemporaries, before past and future generations prompted me to decide to run again for the presidency,&#8221; the pro-EU and pro-NATO candidate said.<\/p>\n<p>If Poroshenko is able to implement his plans, Ukraine will apply to join the EU in 2024 and a special court to try corruption cases would be up and running this year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Poroshenko came to power in the 2014 elections after\u00a0<span>mass protests forced out former president Viktor Yanukovich.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, he has lost popularity because of his inability to combat corruption and stop the war in the eastern Donbas region, which has claimed more than 10,000 lives.<\/p>\n<p>Poroshenko, however, may be a more predictable option for investors than his nearest challengers such as former Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/2014\/05\/profile-yulia-tymoshenko-201452373836833511.html\">Yulia Tymoshenko<\/a> or Volodymyr Zelenskiy, a political novice who achieved fame as a comic actor.<\/p>\n<p>Tymoshenko, the frontrunner, wants to cut gas prices for households, which may set her on a collision course with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and other foreign backers who pumped billions into Ukraine to keep its war-scarred economy afloat.<\/p>\n<p>In late 2013, Moscow-backed Yanukovich sparked massive protests when he refused, at the last minute, to sign an association accord forging closer ties between Ukraine and the European Union.<\/p>\n<p>After Yanukovich fled, Russian President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/vladimir-putin.html\">Vladimir Putin<\/a> revealed that a special operation organised by Moscow had helped the Ukrainian leader escape.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Yanukovich <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/01\/ukraine-viktor-yanukovich-13-year-jail-term-treason-190124151005652.html\">was sentenced to 13 years in prison<\/a> for committing treason when he attempted to quash the popular uprising.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Yanukovich\u00a0was charged with high treason for asking\u00a0Putin to send Russian troops to Ukraine\u00a0after he fled the ex-Soviet country.<\/p>\n<p>Moscow annexed Ukraine&#8217;s Crimea Peninsula in 2014 and supported an uprising by Russian-speaking separatists in the east of the ex-Soviet country.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"32\">\n<p>\n            SOURCE:<br \/>\n            <span>Al Jazeera and news agencies<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ukraine&#8217;s President\u00a0Petro Poroshenko\u00a0will run for a second term in office in the upcoming elections scheduled to take place in April.
