{"id":31024,"date":"2019-01-29T11:23:06","date_gmt":"2019-01-29T11:23:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=31024"},"modified":"2019-01-29T11:23:06","modified_gmt":"2019-01-29T11:23:06","slug":"pakistan-court-upholds-aasia-bibis-blasphemy-acquittal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=31024","title":{"rendered":"Pakistan court upholds Aasia Bibi&#8217;s blasphemy acquittal"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"141.94298617\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Pakistan&#8217;s Supreme Court has upheld the acquittal of a Christian woman charged with blasphemy, standing by its earlier verdict that sparked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/11\/pakistan-thousands-protest-blasphemy-acquittal-ignore-pm-call-181101140852399.html\">days of protests<\/a>, death threats and nationwide chaos.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The country&#8217;s top court in the capital, Islamabad, on Tuesday, dismissed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/01\/pakistan-supreme-court-review-christian-blasphemy-acquittal-190128101320722.html\">review petition<\/a> against Aasia Bibi, who spent eight years on death row for blasphemy before being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/10\/pakistan-court-acquits-christian-woman-accused-blasphemy-181031035547726.html\">released last October<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The three-judge panel said arguments of the lawyer acting on behalf of the petitioners did not satisfy the judges.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On merit, this petition is dismissed,&#8221; Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa said in court.<\/p>\n<p>She is now free to leave the country. Unconfirmed Pakistani media reports said her two daughters have already gone to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/canada.html\">Canada<\/a>, where they&#8217;ve been granted asylum.<\/p>\n<p><span>Bibi\u00a0<\/span>is currently under guard at a secret location in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/pakistan.html\">Pakistan<\/a> for her own safety.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am really gratefully to everybody. Now after nine years it is confirmed that I am free and I will be going to hug my daughters,&#8221; a friend quoted Bibi as saying to <span>The Associated Press,\u00a0<\/span>on condition of anonymity fearing for his own safety.<\/p>\n<p>Her lawyer, Saiful Malook, who returned to Islamabad after fleeing the country amid death threats, called the decision a victory for Pakistan&#8217;s constitution and rule of law.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>&#8216;Duty to protect&#8217;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Amnesty International issued a statement calling for her to be allowed to &#8220;reunite with her family and seek safety in a country of her choice&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;The authorities must also resist and investigate any attempts to intimidate the Supreme Court. They have a duty to protect against threats of violence to harm religious minorities or the lives of judges or other government officials,&#8221; said Amnesty South Asia campaigner Rimmel Mohydin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The 54-year old was arrested in 2009 after being accused of blasphemy following a quarrel with two female Muslim farm workers who refused to drink from a water container used by a Christian in a village in eastern Punjab province.<\/p>\n<p><span>Bibi has always denied committing blasphemy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The case became emblematic of fair trial concerns around Pakistan&#8217;s strict blasphemy laws.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The far-right Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) threatened to hold <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/subjects\/protests.html\">protests<\/a> if Bibi&#8217;s acquittal was not reversed.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Khosa said in court that Bibi&#8217;s accusers were guilty of perjury, and if the case hadn&#8217;t been so sensitive, they should have been jailed for life.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The image of Islam we are showing to the world gives me much grief and sorrow,&#8221; said Khosa.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Call for violence<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>TLP called for its members to be ready for action in a message sent to journalists prior to the ruling.<\/p>\n<p>But most of its leaders remain in detention after a government crackdown, and few protesters could be seen at the court in Islamabad, where security appeared as normal.<\/p>\n<div data-embed-type=\"Brightcove\" data-embed-id=\"5855825305001\">\n<table class=\"in-article-item video\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td readability=\"5\">\n<p>Pakistan clears Christian woman in landmark blasphemy case<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p>That did not prevent those who did show up for the hearing from calling for violence against Bibi. &#8220;She deserves to be murdered according to shariah,&#8221; Hafiz Ehtisham Ahmed, an activist linked to the Red Mosque in Islamabad, told AFP news agency.<\/p>\n<p><span><span>&#8220;If she goes abroad, don&#8217;t Muslims live there? If she goes out of Pakistan &#8230; anybody can kill her there.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Blasphemy remains a massively inflammatory issue in Pakistan, where even unproven accusations of insulting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/subjects\/islam.html\">Islam<\/a> can prompt lynchings.
