One of the detained members of Salafist cleric Sheikh Ahmed al-Asir’s group was referred on Thursday to the Military Prosecution on charges of smuggling arms to Syria, reported the National News Agency.<\/p>\n
Military Examining Magistrate Judge Fadi Sawan referred the suspect on charges of also carrying out terrorist attacks.<\/p>\n
The suspect was found to have accompanied al-Asir to his visits to Syria.<\/p>\n
He was arrested during the recent clashes in the southern city of Sidon that took place on June 22 and 23.<\/p>\n
An arrest warrant had previously been issued against the suspect.<\/p>\n
State Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr had charged last week 27 people, 10 of them in absentia.<\/p>\n
Those in custody were interrogated earlier this week by First Military Investigation Judge Riyad Abu Ghida.<\/p>\n
Al-Asir and the singer-turned Salafist Fadel Shaker were among the 27 people charged by Saqr.<\/p>\n
If convinced, the suspects face the death penalty.<\/p>\n
The fighting in Sidon was sparked when al-Asir’s supporters opened fire on an army checkpoint, leaving around 18 soldiers and more than 20 gunmen dead.<\/p>\n
The gunbattles concentrated in the area of Bilal Bin Rabah Mosque and nearby buildings in Abra.<\/p>\n
Al-Asir, a 45-year-old cleric who supports the overwhelmingly Sunni rebels fighting to topple Syrian President Bashar Assad, is no where to be found along with Shaker.<\/p>\n
