Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said in a televised announcement on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Guaido, the 35-year-old head of the National Assembly, proclaimed himself acting president of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/venezuela.html\">Venezuela<\/a> during massive street rallies this week.<\/p>\n<p>He is trying to remove Maduro from the economically strapped country following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/05\/venezuela-elections-2018-key-points-180518100733025.html\">controversial elections<\/a> that saw the socialist leader sworn in for a second term.<\/p>\n<p>Maduro&#8217;s reelection last year was contested by the opposition and criticised internationally &#8211; but he has until now retained the loyalty of the powerful military.<\/p>\n<p>The United States, Brazil, Argentina and other countries had already endorsed Guaido in repudiation of Maduro.<\/p>\n<p>Spain is closely linked to Venezuela, a former colony, as some 200,000 of its nationals live there.<\/p>\n<p>Since his self-proclamation as interim leader, Guaido has rejected an offer of talks with Maduro and called for a &#8220;major demonstration&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>French President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2017\/04\/profile-emmanuel-macron-170403132712654.html\">Emmanuel Macron<\/a> echoed the Spanish ultimatum.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Unless elections are announced within eight days, we will be ready to recognise @jguaido as &#8216;President in charge&#8217;
