{"id":30286,"date":"2019-01-23T16:22:32","date_gmt":"2019-01-23T16:22:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=30286"},"modified":"2019-01-23T16:22:32","modified_gmt":"2019-01-23T16:22:32","slug":"sterling-hits-2-month-high-as-labour-signals-brexit-delay-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=30286","title":{"rendered":"Sterling hits 2-month high as Labour signals Brexit delay support"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"90.441495778\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Britain&#8217;s pound sterling rose above $1.3 after the British opposition <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/labour-party.html\">Labour Party<\/a> said it was &#8220;highly likely&#8221; to back any attempt by politicians to prevent a disorderly, no-deal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/events\/brexit.html\">Brexit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">With little time left until the March 29 Brexit deadline, there is no agreement in London on how or even whether it should exit the world&#8217;s biggest trading bloc.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">But the pound is gaining as investors buy the currency, betting that a no-deal Brexit can be avoided if parliament exerts greater control over the process.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Overall the view is parliament doesn&#8217;t want a hard Brexit, nor does the EU&#8230; and if that&#8217;s the case I don&#8217;t see how it can happen,&#8221; said Justin Onuekwusi, a fund manager at Legal &#038; General Investment Management.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are neutral on sterling as you have to be quite nimble,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>The pound strengthened 0.3 percent against the dollar to $1.3013, a two-month high. It also rose for a third consecutive day versus the euro to 87.33 pence.<\/p>\n<p>A sustained rally by the pound could be scuppered if Brexit is delayed, said Thu Lan Nguyen, an FX strategist at Commerzbank in Frankfurt.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Delaying is far from finding a solution&#8230; hardline Brexiteers would never tolerate an indefinite delay of the EU exit,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>The pound was boosted on Tuesday by strong employment data which suggested Britain&#8217;s labour market remained robust despite an economic slowdown ahead of Brexit.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign exchange strategists polled by Reuters last week saw the pound gaining more than eight percent against the US dollar this year &#8211; assuming Britain and the EU part ways amicably.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"32\">\n<p>\n            SOURCE:<br \/>\n            <span>Reuters news agency<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Britain&#8217;s pound sterling rose above $1.3 after the British opposition Labour Party said it was &#8220;highly likely&#8221; to back any attempt by politicians to prevent a disorderly, no-deal Brexit.
