{"id":29389,"date":"2019-01-16T11:23:17","date_gmt":"2019-01-16T11:23:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=29389"},"modified":"2019-01-16T11:23:17","modified_gmt":"2019-01-16T11:23:17","slug":"kenya-attack-leaves-14-dead-siege-over-says-president","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=29389","title":{"rendered":"Kenya attack leaves 14 dead, siege over says president"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"158.146572104\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Kenyan President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/features\/2013\/02\/2013222161738464350.html\">Uhuru Kenyatta<\/a> said all the gunmen behind Nairobi hotel complex <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/01\/explosions-gunfire-heard-kenyan-capital-nairobi-190115130845511.html\">attack<\/a> have been killed and the 17-hour hostage crisis is over.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span>In a national television address, Kenyatta said on Wednesday\u00a0<\/span>14 civilians died in the attack claimed by the al-Shabab armed group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The president said more than 700 civilians were evacuated from the complex.<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;The security operation at Dusit complex is over and all the terrorists have been eliminated,&#8221;\u00a0<span>said Kenyatta.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>&#8220;We have confirmation that 14 innocent lives were lost through the hands of these murderers, terrorists with others injured.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Earlier reports said at least 15 people were killed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Authorities sent special forces into the hotel to flush out the gunmen. Kenyatta did not say how many attackers were involved.<\/p>\n<div data-embed-type=\"Brightcove\" data-embed-id=\"5989890338001\">\n<table class=\"in-article-item video\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td readability=\"5\">\n<p>Gunmen kill 14 at Nairobi hotel in attack by al-Shabab<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>&#8220;We are grieving as a country this morning and my heart &#8211; and that of every Kenyan &#8211; goes out to the innocent men and women violated by senseless violence. We wish the injured quick recovery and as a nation, we will continue to pray for them,&#8221; said Kenyatta.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span><span><strong>Tormented night<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A police source told AFP news agency two attackers were shot dead on Wednesday morning after a prolonged shootout.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The two have red bandanas tied around their forehead and bullets strapped around their chest with several magazines each,&#8221; the senior police officer said. &#8220;Each had an AK-47 which has been secured.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It was a tormented night for families of those trapped as they waited outside the hotel with sporadic gunfire ringing out, and the rescue of dozens of people at about 3:30am (00:30GMT).<\/p>\n<p>Mourning families and friends gathered at a nearby mortuary on Wednesday. Families who went to the Chiromo morgue were told they could not view bodies until a forensic investigation had been performed, provoking grief and anger.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My sister is not in any of the hospitals and the last time we spoke she was a bit calm. But suddenly she started crying and shouting and I could hear gunshots and her phone remained on but she wasn&#8217;t speaking,&#8221; said a woman who gave her name as Njoki.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have no doubt her body is here,&#8221; she said, weeping.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Coordinated attack<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>CCTV footage broadcast on local media showed four black-clad, heavily armed men entering the complex.<\/p>\n<p>According to Kenya&#8217;s police chief, Joseph Boinnet, the coordinated assault began at 3pm local time (12:00 GMT) on Tuesday with an explosion that targeted three vehicles outside a bank, and a suicide bombing in the hotel lobby that severely wounded a number of guests.<\/p>\n<p>Hiram Macharia, a marketing executive at LG Electronics, said security officers rescued him and some colleagues from their office two hours after the attack began. But one workmate did not survive.<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;One of our colleagues went to the top of the building and his body was found there,&#8221; he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"imagecontainer item\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/1\/16\/bb7fa840a2664646b0723efe535d59f6_18.jpg\">\n<table class=\"image\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1\">\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/1\/16\/bb7fa840a2664646b0723efe535d59f6_18.jpg\" border=\"0\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"2\">\n<td class=\"caption\">People are evacuated by a member of security forces [Baz Ratner\/Reuters]<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The attack was claimed by the al-Qaeda-linked armed group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/al-shabab.html\">al-Shabab<\/a>, which has repeatedly targeted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/kenya.html\">Kenya<\/a> since it sent its army into Somalia in October 2011 to fight the group.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our fighters killed 47 enemies inside the complex. The mujahideen are still in control of most parts of the building complex,&#8221; Abdiaziz Abu Mus&#8217;ab, the group&#8217;s military operations spokesperson, told Al Jazeera on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Westgate assault<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The attack at DusitD2 was the first in Nairobi since gunmen stormed the city&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/africa\/2013\/09\/kenya-president-says-mall-siege-has-ended-201392417422166745.html\">Westgate<\/a> shopping mall in 2013, killing at least 67 people.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On April 2, 2015, another al-Shabab attack killed 148 people at the university in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2015\/04\/kenya-garissa-university-attack-150402155656780.html\">Garissa<\/a>, in eastern Kenya.<\/p>\n<p>The Westgate attack resulted in many upscale establishments and shopping centres in the capital &#8211; including the Dusit &#8211; putting up security barriers to check cars and pedestrians.<\/p>\n<p><span>Like the attack at the Westgate Mall, this one appeared aimed at wealthy Kenyans and foreigners. It came a day after a magistrate ruled three men must stand trial in connection with the Westgate Mall siege.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The US State Department confirmed an American citizen was among those killed in the latest assault, but did not release the victim&#8217;s identity.
