{"id":29362,"date":"2019-01-16T07:25:03","date_gmt":"2019-01-16T07:25:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=29362"},"modified":"2019-01-16T07:25:03","modified_gmt":"2019-01-16T07:25:03","slug":"the-feminist-knitting-circle-in-india-upending-patriarchal-norms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=29362","title":{"rendered":"The feminist knitting circle in India upending patriarchal norms"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-140415133408172\" readability=\"291.596266851\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Uttarakhand, India &#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0When seven women in the\u00a0remote mountain village\u00a0of Ranikhet first met Mala Srikanth,\u00a0they stood with their heads down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Srikanth was a divorcee, retired doctor, ex-military, single mother of two daughters &#8211; and wore jeans.\u00a0In this northern Indian community, all of this was unfathomable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The women had come from poor backgrounds and were there to knit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In recent years, a quiet matriarchal revolution has\u00a0been\u00a0building at the foothills of the Himalayas, reshaping a system that has long dictated the lives of women.\u00a0The change in Ranikhet and surrounding villages stems from a knitting circle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Since forming five years ago, 14 women\u00a0now meet\u00a0every Wednesday morning\u00a0in Srikanth&#8217;s home and knit perfectly &#8211; a feat achieved through months of training.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;They now come in their nicest clothes, heads held high and they walk with confidence,&#8221; said Srikanth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For her, it is not enough to knit an item that will be sold with pity by an NGO, if at all &#8211; you knit to the highest standards, standards that she believes every woman should hold themselves to in their daily life as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As knitting needles flash between fingers, the women waste no time talking up a frenzy, interrupting each other and occasionally drowning out the chatter with laughter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"imagecontainer item\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/1\/6\/7b3e27af65764f76b1f952a0875abb78_18.jpg\">\n<table class=\"image\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"2\">\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/1\/6\/7b3e27af65764f76b1f952a0875abb78_18.jpg\" border=\"0\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"6\">\n<td class=\"caption\" readability=\"7\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Since forming five years ago, 14 women\u00a0now meet regularly to for a knitting session<\/span>\u00a0[Maria de la Guardia\/Al Jazeera]<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When the language changes from Hindi to local Garhwali, the topic becomes more serious.\u00a0Conversations address taboo subjects, from birth control and alcoholism to\u00a0sex\u00a0and domestic violence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;I have talked about things with these women that I have never told anyone before,&#8221; said knitter Gudiya Khan.\u00a0&#8220;We wait the whole week for Wednesday to come so that we can meet everyone and share our experiences, our ups and downs in life.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">At home, she sits with old family photos strewn across her bed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">One shows her wedding day. Her grandmother&#8217;s hand rests on her blue veil before turmeric was applied to her forehead in a traditional ritual.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Married at 16 to a cousin twice her age, her life changed forever within months. As her alcoholic husband became increasingly abusive, his addiction pushed them deeper into poverty. Within a year, she gave birth to a baby boy in a nearby village home, underage and therefore unable to go to a government hospital.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Her health, her pain and her fears were forfeited to protect her husband.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The\u00a0Uttarakhand State Commission for Women\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailypioneer.com\/2015\/state-editions\/every-2nd-woman-in-ukhand-victim-of-domestic-violence.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"s2\">reports<\/span><\/a>\u00a0that one in two women are victims of domestic violence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Suhela\u00a0Khan, programme coordinator for UN Women India MCO,\u00a0said: &#8220;Women&#8217;s rights are only considered to be women&#8217;s issues\u00a0and are not\u00a0being seen as a matter of human rights.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In Ranikhet, though,\u00a0female leadership is challenging patriarchy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Gudiya Khan became a widow and single mother after her husband died from a brain haemorrhage resulting from alcohol abuse.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Twenty kilometres away, in a region where alcoholism is\u00a0common\u00a0among men, a used rum bottle sits on the bedside table of knitter\u00a0Mamta\u00a0Pandey, inside it, a clipping from a green-leafed plant\u00a0struggles to grow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Gudiya Khan and Pandey are two knitting circle members who became breadwinners for their\u00a0families and\u00a0are financially independent.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Transparency and independence<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The group is independent of any organisation or NGO and sales\u00a0are\u00a0largely\u00a0by\u00a0word-of-mouth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">An online shop is planned for early 2019. Srikanth helped each member to open a personal bank account where their monthly salary is deposited; an amount summed up in neat hand-writing on lined,\u00a0yellow pages of a hardback notebook kept that keeps a record of how much each woman produces weekly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In an effort to encourage transparency,\u00a0formal\u00a0banking\u00a0further eliminates any interference by husbands or male family members who attempt to claim the women&#8217;s earnings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;Knitting has completely changed my life, said Gudiya Khan as she works on an oatmeal-coloured cushion cover.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Since meeting Srikanth five years ago, her single-room shack has been extended three-fold and sits atop the highest peak in her picturesque village.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Her sons, aged 19 and 17, are excelling in their education,\u00a0paid for by the income her\u00a0<span>knitting<\/span> has generated,\u00a0and have vowed to never touch alcohol.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;Research shows that women spend 90 percent of what they earn on the health and education of her children and within her family. So thereby, they not only contribute to the betterment of their families but in turn contribute to the development of communities and society at large and generations to come,&#8221; said\u00a0Suhela Khan of the UN programme.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"article-quotebox\"><p>There is little difference between sons and daughters today, with both contributing equally in everything, including earning money.<\/p>\n<p class=\"blockquote-writer\">Deepa Bhatt, knitter<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Ranikhet\u00a0knitting circle has\u00a0led to\u00a0multigenerational change.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">At the session, with wide eyes and raised eyebrows, the knitters discuss the gender of babies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In India, a central factor in femicide is the cost burden associated with daughters when it comes to dowries and marriage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;There is little difference between sons and daughters\u00a0today, with both contributing equally in everything, including earning money,&#8221; said knitter Deepa Bhatt.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Tongue in cheek, Neeru\u00a0Srivastava\u00a0added: &#8220;I have a son, but sometimes I feel it would have been better had I had a daughter.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A day later, Pandey reflected on her abusive and confusing upbringing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Through tears, she said: &#8220;I am now able to talk with my daughter openly about everything, which mothers were not able to in my generation.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Her daughter\u00a0has been guided on the\u00a0changes her body will\u00a0undergo during puberty, including periods, something Pandey had to learn about on her own. &#8220;Things I could not imagine discussing are now the new norm.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">With the exception of a young newlywed, none of the\u00a0knitters\u00a0has gotten pregnant since\u00a0taking\u00a0control of their bodies\u00a0through the\u00a0use of contraception and rates of domestic violence have been quelled.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;Now that I feel empowered and confident, I help others in my community and village as much as I can. I advise and guide, and they do listen,&#8221; Gudiya Khan said. &#8220;They go back and continue to help other women. There\u00a0has been a\u00a0chain reaction.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"imagecontainer item\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/1\/6\/5ec8bb47c03044768341cdd9fc232829_18.jpg\">\n<table class=\"image\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"2\">\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/1\/6\/5ec8bb47c03044768341cdd9fc232829_18.jpg\" border=\"0\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"4\">\n<td class=\"caption\">\n<span>With more women expressing interest in the group, Srikanth plans to initiate 16 additional knitters into the circle in 2019<\/span>\u00a0[Maria de la Guardia\/Al Jazeera]<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Pandey estimates that half of the women in her village,\u00a0who are\u00a0not part of the knitting circle, have become more outspoken and confident as a result of her\u00a0example. &#8220;They think about the future and they think about the bigger picture &#8211; about saving more and doing something for themselves.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The knitters have been able to send their children to school,\u00a0extend and improve their homes and buy furniture and\u00a0jewellery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Each woman\u00a0also\u00a0contributes 200 rupees ($2.80) a month to a collective saving scheme. &#8220;If anyone is ever in need, they will loan out the money to that person on minimal interest rates,&#8221; said Gudiya Khan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Suhela\u00a0recognises that there have\u00a0been\u00a0backlashes\u00a0in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/india.html\">India<\/a>\u00a0against women who become financially independent\u00a0and outspoken.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;It is not a simple issue. Despite progressive legislation and despite awareness for gender equality there is still a lot to be done,&#8221; she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The knitting circle has been spared from criticism or threats. Instead, women from the villages are embracing their newfound voices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The greatest challenges came in the\u00a0first few weeks of the circle forming.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Hindu women wouldn&#8217;t sit next to a Muslim, while those on their period were banished and higher castes refused tea made by lower castes. Srikanth made it clear that all women are equal. Today, there is a sense of an unbreakable sisterhood.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Gudiya Khan, the\u00a0only Muslim in the knitting circle, said:\u00a0&#8220;The life of a Hindu or a Muslim woman is the same because when you cry the tears are the same, the difficulties are the same. So, the life of a woman, no matter what religion, is the same.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">With more women expressing interest in the group, Srikanth plans to initiate 16 more individuals\u00a0into the circle in 2019, recruited in sets of eight to ease the training period\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0all\u00a0to\u00a0be taught and\u00a0overseen\u00a0by\u00a0the established members.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Srikanth said she had never intended to empower\u00a0anyone\u00a0or cause an uprising, she simply wanted to lead great\u00a0knitters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;We are equals.
