{"id":29244,"date":"2019-01-15T14:22:18","date_gmt":"2019-01-15T14:22:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=29244"},"modified":"2019-01-15T14:22:18","modified_gmt":"2019-01-15T14:22:18","slug":"totos-africa-to-play-for-eternity-in-namibia-desert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=29244","title":{"rendered":"Toto&#8217;s &#8216;Africa&#8217; to play &#8216;for eternity&#8217; in Namibia desert"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"83.1566820276\">\n<div class=\"Authors__component BasicArticle__authors\" readability=\"33\">\n<p>Written by <span class=\"Authors__writer\">Tara John, CNN<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Toto&#8217;s &#8220;Africa&#8221; has come home, so to speak, thanks to an installation by an artist who plans to play the song on loop in a Namibian desert &#8212; for eternity.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Paragraph__component BasicArticle__paragraph BasicArticle__pad\" readability=\"30.251572327\">\nGerman-Namibian artist Max Siedentopf has<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/maxsiedentopf.com\/toto-forever\/\" target=\"_blank\">set up the sound installation<\/a>, called &#8220;Toto Forever,&#8221; in an undisclosed location in the 1,200 mile-long Namib Desert.\n<\/div>\n<p>The desert, on the west coast of Southern Africa, is around 55 million years old &#8212; making it the world&#8217;s oldest desert and the &#8220;perfect spot&#8221; for his work, Siedentopf, 27, told CNN in an email. &#8220;Hopefully the song will play just as long,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>Siedentopf is using solar batteries to power the entire installation, which consists of plinths supporting six speakers attached to a single MP3 player that contains one track: Toto&#8217;s &#8220;Africa.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"BasicArticle__image BasicArticle__padLarge\" readability=\"31\">\n<div readability=\"7\">\n<div class=\"Image__component\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image__image\" src=\"https:\/\/dynaimage.cdn.cnn.com\/cnn\/e_blur:500,q_auto:low,w_50,c_fit\/http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.cnn.com%2Fcnnnext%2Fdam%2Fassets%2F190115110804-01-toto-forever-namibia-desert.jpg\" alt=\"A shot of the installation by Max Siedentopf.\"><\/div>\n<p>A shot of the installation by Max Siedentopf.<!-- --> <span class=\"BasicArticle__credit\">Credit: <\/span><span class=\"BasicArticle__credit\">Max Siedentopf<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The song has been a pop-culture phenomenon since its release in 1982, topping the US Billboard chart and selling more than 4 million copies in the US alone. <\/p>\n<div class=\"Paragraph__component BasicArticle__paragraph BasicArticle__pad\" readability=\"39.6812865497\">\nIn recent years, rock band Weezer made a cover of it; a sample of the song is featured in the movie &#8220;Aquaman&#8221;; it has a dedicated<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/africabytotobot?lang%3Den\" target=\"_blank\">Twitter bot<\/a>, which has been spitting out lyrics every couple of hours since 2016; and its melody, &#8220;I bless the rains down in Africa,&#8221; is frequently belted out by revelers at parties and weddings across the world.\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Even though &#8216;Africa&#8217; by Toto was released 1982 it is still very much present in today&#8217;s pop culture and frequently used for memes and even entire Reddit pages are dedicated to the song,&#8221; Siedentopf, who is based in London, said.  <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was very intrigued by this and wanted to pay the song the ultimate homage and physically exhibit &#8216;Africa&#8217; in Africa.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"Paragraph__component BasicArticle__paragraph BasicArticle__pad\" readability=\"38.2277227723\">\nThe song &#8212; which was written by Toto&#8217;s late drummer, Jeff Porcaro, and keyboard player David Paich &#8212; has occasionally been<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2017\/08\/13\/toto-africa-lyrics\/\" target=\"_blank\">mocked <\/a>for its lack of local knowledge: One of the lyrics claims &#8220;Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti,&#8221; but Africa&#8217;s highest peak can&#8217;t be seen from the Serengeti.\n<\/div>\n<p>When asked whether his work was making fun of the tendency of non-Africans to exoticize the continent, Siedentopf said there was a lot to say about Western stereotypes, but &#8220;putting (that) aside, the installation is supposed to look more at the lighter side of things and everyone should be able to enjoy it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said he won&#8217;t reveal exact the location of the work, adding that it is &#8220;like a treasure that only the most loyal of Toto fans can find.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Written by Tara John, CNN Toto&#8217;s &#8220;Africa&#8221; has come home, so to speak, thanks to an installation by an artist who plans to play the song on loop in a Namibian desert &#8212; for eternity.
