{"id":28666,"date":"2019-01-11T06:22:13","date_gmt":"2019-01-11T06:22:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=28666"},"modified":"2019-01-11T06:22:13","modified_gmt":"2019-01-11T06:22:13","slug":"taiwan-tsai-names-new-premier-after-resignation-over-poll-losses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=28666","title":{"rendered":"Taiwan: Tsai names new premier after resignation over poll losses"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"135.410697817\">\n<p class=\"speakable\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/taiwan.html\">Taiwan<\/a>&#8216;s President <span>Tsai Ing-wen\u00a0<\/span>has named the ruling pro-independence party&#8217;s former chairman as premier, after the incumbent stepped down along with the entire cabinet in the wake of a setback in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/11\/news-rattles-taiwan-elections-181123005140173.html\">local polls<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The election losses in November presented a major challenge to Tsai, who came under criticism at home over her reform agenda while facing renewed threats from China, which considers self-ruled Taiwan a breakaway province.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Tsai on Friday appinted Su Tseng-chang, the former chairman of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for two terms, who succeeds William Lai<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Taiwan&#8217;s democracy and development must face certain challenges,&#8221; Tsai said, adding that China was looking to force its &#8220;one country, two systems&#8221; structure on the island.<\/p>\n<p>Taiwan&#8217;s premier forms the cabinet and runs the government on a day-to-day basis.<\/p>\n<p>Su vowed to lead the administration amid the challenges and learn from earlier mistakes. &#8220;The situation is difficult and the task is tough,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>His appointment followed the resignation of Lai, the second premier to quit since Tsai took office in 2016, in line with a practice of leaders quitting when their party loses a major election.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I must resign to take responsibility for the election defeat,&#8221; Lai, who had taken office in September 2017, told a cabinet meeting earlier on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Two months ago, Tsai <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/11\/taiwan-president-quits-party-leadership-polls-setback-181124152410229.html\">immediately resigned<\/a> as chair of the DPP after it won just six out of 22 local authorities while the opposition\u00a0Kuomintang (KMT) party, seen as being close to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/china.html\">China<\/a>,\u00a0took 15 cities and counties.<\/p>\n<div data-embed-type=\"Brightcove\" data-embed-id=\"5971082439001\">\n<table class=\"in-article-item video Fullwidth\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td readability=\"5\">\n<p>INSIDE STORY: Will Taiwan vote&#8217;s outcome bring China-friendly party? (24:50)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p>With just about a year until the next presidential election, analysts say Tsai and the new premier need to shore up public support for the government&#8217;s policy on relations with Beijing and further boost the island&#8217;s export-reliant economy in a challenging year amid a China-US trade war.<\/p>\n<p>Su was appointed premier in 2006 by former president Chen Shui-bian, who infuriated Beijing and strained Taiwan&#8217;s relationship with the United States during his tenure from 2000 to 2008.<\/p>\n<p>Su, who is popular among the DPP&#8217;s core supporters, has led Taiwan&#8217;s most populous New Taipei City for years. He was defeated by a candidate from the KMT in November.<\/p>\n<p>Tsai has said her administration would reflect upon the election defeats but would stand firm to defend Taiwan&#8217;s democracy in the face of renewed Chinese threats.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese President Xi Jinping, who has stepped up pressure on Taiwan since Tsai became president, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/01\/xi-change-fact-taiwan-part-china-190102030037389.html\">threatened earlier this month to use force<\/a> to bring the island under Beijing&#8217;s rule and urged &#8220;reunification&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The new premier not only has to focus on domestic matters but must also pay much more attention to cross-strait and national security issues,&#8221; Yao Chia-wen, a senior adviser to the president, told Reuters news agency.<\/p>\n<p>He said the new premier must deal with issues including the prevention of swine fever from China, as well as possible election interference.<\/p>\n<p>Some from within the embattled leader&#8217;s party have urged Tsai not to seek re-election.
