{"id":28616,"date":"2019-01-10T22:23:12","date_gmt":"2019-01-10T22:23:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=28616"},"modified":"2019-01-10T22:23:12","modified_gmt":"2019-01-10T22:23:12","slug":"as-trump-heads-to-border-federal-workers-rally-against-shutdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=28616","title":{"rendered":"As Trump heads to border, federal workers rally against shutdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"142.542224992\">\n<p class=\"speakable\"><strong>Washington, DC &#8211;<\/strong> As US President Donald Trump headed to the country&#8217;s southern border with Mexico on Thursday, federal workers, unions and some Democrats rallied in the nation&#8217;s capital against the ongoing partial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/01\/gov-shutdown-long-affected-190107150120233.html\">government shutdown.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Trump&#8217;s trip to Texas to make his case for a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/12\/border-trump-wall-pledge-casts-long-shadow-181210211443443.html\">wall on the US-Mexico border<\/a>\u00a0comes on the 20th day of the shutdown, which was born from Trump&#8217;s demand that Congress provide more than $5bn in funding for the wall, a measure that Democrats have opposed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">&#8220;Let&#8217;s call this shutdown what it is: It&#8217;s a lockout,&#8221; Richard Trumka, president of the AFL-CIO, a federation of unions, told the crowd. &#8220;Shame on the Senate. Shame on the White House. This lockout has to end, and it has to end now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Trumka added, &#8220;Instead of going to the border for a photo op, president Trump should be on the Hill negotiating a deal to open the federal government and put out people back to work.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Demonstrators chanted against Trump, while placards blamed him for the ongoing shutdown. &#8220;Do your jobs, so we can do ours,&#8221; several protesters chanted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Stop the shutdown,&#8221; others screamed. &#8220;We want to work.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The shutdown started on December 22 and has affected key government agencies, forcing many federal workers to continue working without pay and others to simply stay at home.<\/p>\n<p>At least two unions have filed lawsuits against the Trump administration over the shutdown.<\/p>\n<h2>&#8216;Lives as political pawns&#8217;\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/01\/shutdown-trump-walks-meeting-border-wall-funds-190109205014639.html\">walked out<\/a> of a meeting with top Democrats Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer on Wednesday, and he had no additional negotiations scheduled when he took off for McAllen, Texas, on Thursday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to reporters on Thursday morning, Trump suggested that he may declare a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/01\/trump-threatens-declare-emergency-border-visit-190110145832243.html\">national emergency<\/a> in order to obtain funding for the wall without congressional approval. If he moved forward with that threat, it would likely be challneged in the courts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump has blamed Democrats for the shutdown, accusing them of standing in the way of national security.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But a POLITICO\/Morning Consult poll published on Wednesday found that nearly half of voters blame Trump for the shutdown, while only 33 percent blame Democrats.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"imagecontainer item\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/1\/10\/778433d69ce743528bed23413a0ad581_18.jpg\">\n<table class=\"image\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"2\">\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/1\/10\/778433d69ce743528bed23413a0ad581_18.jpg\" border=\"0\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"4\">\n<td class=\"caption\">A demonstrator holds a sign, signifying hundreds of thousands of federal employees who won\u2019t be receiving their paychecks as a result of the partial government shutdown [Carlos Barria\/Reuters]\u00a0<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Last week, with pressuring mounting, Trump said he would allow the partial shutdown to continue for &#8220;months or even years&#8221; if he did not get funding for the border wall.<\/p>\n<p>At Thursday&#8217;s rally in Washington, DC, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, a Democrat, accused Trump of inflicting &#8220;pain&#8221; on federal workers. &#8220;Shutting down the government is not a policy that should be followed,&#8221; he told the crowd.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ladies and gentlemen, we need to keep yelling and screaming and hollering until this president opens up that government &#8211; of the people, for the people and by the people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>US Senator Mark Warner, a Democrat from Virginia, called on Senate politicians to pass bills to reopen the federal government.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You want to fight about border security?
