{"id":28436,"date":"2019-01-09T15:22:42","date_gmt":"2019-01-09T15:22:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=28436"},"modified":"2019-01-09T15:22:42","modified_gmt":"2019-01-09T15:22:42","slug":"breaking-up-hard-to-do-turkey-says-of-us-and-kurd-terrorists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=28436","title":{"rendered":"Breaking up hard to do, Turkey says of US and Kurd &#8216;terrorists&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"137.362110312\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-states.html\">United States<\/a>\u00a0faces difficulties in its withdrawal from Syria, particularly in parting ways with the Kurdish fighters it allied with to battle the armed group ISIL, Turkey&#8217;s foreign minister said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span>&#8220;It is hard to break up with a terrorist organisation after being involved with it at this level,&#8221; <span>Mevlut Cavusoglu\u00a0<\/span>told a<\/span>\u00a0parliamentary foreign affairs committee on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">His remarks came a day after US National Security Adviser John Bolton <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/01\/erdogan-troop-syria-pullout-partners-190108013110984.html\">held talks<\/a>\u00a0with officials in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/turkey.html\">Turkey<\/a>\u00a0during an apparently tense visit.<\/p>\n<p>Ankara has been infuriated by Bolton&#8217;s demand for assurances that Turkey will not attack US-allied Kurdish fighters in northeastern Syria before American troops pull out of the complex region.<\/p>\n<p data-elm-loc=\"3\">&#8220;There are different voices coming from different institutions in the US&#8221; over the withdrawal process, Cavusoglu said, echoing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/01\/erdogan-mistaken-syrian-kurd-fighters-safety-190108094851818.html\">remarks<\/a>\u00a0by Turkish President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/recep-tayyip-erdogan.html\">Recep Tayyip Erdogan<\/a>\u00a0on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p data-elm-loc=\"3\">He suggested closer cooperation with US adversaries was likely on the horizon.<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;We want\u00a0to be in coordination with Western countries &#8211; but especially with Russia and Iran during the US withdrawal process. We do not want to create a vacuum for terrorist organisations to use after the withdrawal,&#8221; said\u00a0<span>Cavusoglu.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>During his visit to Israel on Sunday,\u00a0Bolton <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/01\/john-bolton-israel-turkey-discuss-syria-pullout-190106060645545.html\">set pre-conditions<\/a> for the US pullout\u00a0from Syria that included Turkey guaranteeing the safety of the Washington-backed Kurdish People&#8217;s Protection Units (YPG), which spearheaded the fight against Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/isis-isil.html\">ISIL<\/a>, also known as ISIS).<\/p>\n<p>US President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2016\/11\/profile-president-donald-trump-161109050153947.html\">Donald Trump<\/a> announced last month the withdrawal of some 2,000 US troops from Syria in a statement that shocked many politicians in Washington as well as Western and Kurdish allies who fought alongside the US in the war-torn country.<\/p>\n<h2>Turkey&#8217;s criticism<\/h2>\n<p>Turkey has long condemned Washington for its military relationship with the YPG. Ankara considers the\u00a0militia and its political wing &#8211; the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) &#8211; to be &#8220;terrorist groups&#8221; with ties to the banned Kurdistan Workers&#8217; Party (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/pkk.html\">PKK<\/a>) in Turkey.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span><span>Trump&#8217;s decision to withdraw troops was initially expected to be carried out swiftly, but the timetable became vague in the weeks following his announcement.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Matthew Bryza, a former senior US diplomat, said the United States is looking for a replacement to the Kurdish armed group in the fight against ISIL.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The YPG has provided up to 50,000 troops &#8211; boots on the ground to take the fight directly to ISIS. They fought valiantly and quite successfully. As a result, many American lives were saved,&#8221; he told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The alternative to the YPG from Washington&#8217;s perspective is someone else has to come in,&#8221; Bryza added.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Threat from ISIL<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h2><strong><!-- PAGELOADEDSUCCESSFULLY--><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>France, Britain and local armed groups have warned ISIL has not totally been defeated yet.<\/p>\n<p>Subsequently, US officials made clear the withdrawal would not happen quickly and would take place in an orderly manner, as the White House faced a backlash from members of the US Congress, and even its own staff.<\/p>\n<p><span>The US president&#8217;s withdrawal decision coincided with the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/12\/defense-secretary-mattis-retire-trump-181220222749926.html\">resignation<\/a>\u00a0of American defence chief James Mattis<span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Bryza said Trump&#8217;s unorthodox ways were likely responsible for the chaos enveloping his Syria plans.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Donald Trump flip-flops every day on some policy \u2026 and he has now allowed his policy to be completely reserved by the statement of National Security Adviser Bolton in Israel,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My guess is President Trump took his decision on December 14 to pull US troops out of Syria impulsively.
