{"id":28286,"date":"2019-01-08T13:23:12","date_gmt":"2019-01-08T13:23:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=28286"},"modified":"2019-01-08T13:23:12","modified_gmt":"2019-01-08T13:23:12","slug":"afghan-taliban-cancel-peace-talks-with-us-officials-in-qatar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=28286","title":{"rendered":"Afghan Taliban cancel peace talks with US officials in Qatar"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"124.794434783\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">The Afghan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/taliban.html\">Taliban<\/a>\u00a0have cancelled peace talks with officials from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-states.html\">United States<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>in Qatar this week, following disagreements over the agenda of the meeting, the group confirmed on\u00a0<span>Tuesday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The two-day talks were scheduled to begin on Wednesday in capital, Doha. The Taliban had rejected the participation of Afghan government officials in the deliberations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Taliban have rejected numerous requests from regional powers to allow Afghan officials to take part in the talks, insisting that the US is their main adversary in the 17-year war and that Kabul is a &#8220;puppet&#8221; regime.<\/p>\n<p>The Taliban,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/afghanistan.html\"> Afghanistan<\/a>&#8216;s largest armed group which was toppled from power by a US-led invasion in 2001,\u00a0called off their meeting with the US officials in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/saudi-arabia.html\">Saudi Arabia<\/a> this week following Riyadh&#8217;s insistence on bringing the Western-backed Afghan government to the table.<\/p>\n<p>The talks will be the fourth in a series between Taliban leaders and US special envoy, Zalmay Khalilzad.<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;After mutual consultations, we are going to meet US officials in Doha on Wednesday. The meeting will continue for two days &#8211; Wednesday and Thursday,&#8221; said a senior member of the Afghan Taliban on condition of anonymity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Pakistani and Iranian officials said they were trying to persuade the Taliban to meet Afghan officials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Another senior Taliban leader confirmed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/qatar.html\">Qatar<\/a> meeting and said no other country would be involved.<\/p>\n<p>At the request of the\u00a0US, a Taliban office was established in Doha in 2013 to facilitate peace talks.<\/p>\n<p>But the office had to be closed after the Taliban came under pressure for hoisting the same flag at their office that the group used during its rule in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>Subsequently, the then Afghan President<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/hamid-karzai.html\"> Hamid Karzai<\/a> halted all peace efforts, saying the Doha office was presenting itself as an unofficial embassy for a government-in-exile.<\/p>\n<p>The flag has since been taken down and the office has remained empty with no official announcements of a possible reopening.<\/p>\n<p>Talks with the Taliban have since been taking place elsewhere in Doha.<\/p>\n<h2>US plans to withdraw troops<\/h2>\n<p>The war in Afghanistan is America&#8217;s longest overseas military intervention. It has cost Washington nearly $1 trillion and killed tens of thousands of people.<\/p>\n<p><span>In 2017, US President\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2016\/11\/profile-president-donald-trump-161109050153947.html\">Donald Trump<\/a><span>\u00a0increased the number of his country&#8217;s troops in Afghanistan as part of a new strategy against the Taliban. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There are now about 14,000 US soldiers in the country.
