{"id":27789,"date":"2019-01-02T16:24:02","date_gmt":"2019-01-02T16:24:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=27789"},"modified":"2019-01-02T16:24:02","modified_gmt":"2019-01-02T16:24:02","slug":"thousands-protest-election-fraud-in-madagascar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=27789","title":{"rendered":"Thousands protest &#8216;election fraud&#8217; in Madagascar"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"107.295269168\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Madagascan security forces have fired tear gas to break up a protest by supporters of losing presidential candidate Marc Ravalomanana, who claims he was denied victory in last month&#8217;s election because of fraud.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/12\/president-rajoelina-wins-madagascar-vote-election-commission-181227151623039.html\">run-off vote<\/a> on December 19, Ravalomanana won 44 percent against Andry Rajoelina&#8217;s 55 percent, according to official results.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Thousands of Ravalomanana&#8217;s supporters gathered in the centre of the capital Antananarivo on Wednesday, but were quickly dispersed by police using tear gas, according to an AFP reporter at the scene.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We came to erect a giant screen projecting anomalies in the second-round election but we were fired at with tear gas,&#8221; Hanitra Razafimanantsoa, a lawmaker from Ravalomanana&#8217;s party, told the media.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Respect our choice, we don&#8217;t reserve a fraudulent election,&#8221; read protest banners held by Ravalomanana&#8217;s supporters, who have vowed to hold daily protests.<\/p>\n<p>The country&#8217;s Constitutional Court is reviewing a petition filed by Ravalomanana challenging Rajoelina&#8217;s victory.
