{"id":27693,"date":"2019-01-02T02:22:12","date_gmt":"2019-01-02T02:22:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=27693"},"modified":"2019-01-02T02:22:12","modified_gmt":"2019-01-02T02:22:12","slug":"tens-of-thousands-protest-in-india-over-sabarimala-temple","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=27693","title":{"rendered":"Tens of thousands protest in India over Sabarimala temple"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"112.093126386\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Tens of thousands of women in a southern Indian state have formed a 620km human chain in support of a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/southasia\/2018\/10\/angry-crowd-protests-female-entry-sabarimala-temple-181017105418739.html\">court order overturning<\/a>\u00a0a partial ban on women entering one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/subjects\/hinduism.html\">Hinduism<\/a>&#8216;s holiest temples.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The &#8220;Women&#8217;s Wall&#8221; rally on Tuesday was backed by the communist government in Kerala state, where the court order on the Sabarimala temple had triggered weeks of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/subjects\/protests.html\">protests<\/a> by opponents and supporters of the ban.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Government employees took part in the demonstration, while schools were given a half-day and university exams delayed so that students could join the protest, the Press Trust of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/india.html\">India<\/a> news agency reported.<\/p>\n<p>A government statement issued before the event predicted five million women would participate in the protest.<\/p>\n<p>Kerala has become the venue of an angry showdown between Hindu traditionalists and supporters of September&#8217;s Supreme Court ruling, which ended a centuries-old ban on women of menstrual age entering the temple.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The top court said the ban infringed on the right to worship. Since then, several women have tried to reach the hilltop shrine, but were forced back by opposing activists.<\/p>\n<p>Opponents of the court ruling, which include\u00a0Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/asia\/2014\/05\/modi-from-tea-boy-india-pm-20145139742599119.html\">Narendra Modi<\/a>&#8216;s nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party,\u00a0say that the ban was essential to the rites related to the temple&#8217;s chief deity Ayyappan, considered eternally celibate.<\/p>\n<p>In some Hindu communities, menstruating women are regarded as unclean, leading to restrictions and in a few cases outright bans from entering certain places.<\/p>\n<p>Police have clashed with devotees supporting the ban and have arrested more than 2,000 people.<\/p>\n<p><span>Elizabeth, a school teacher and a member of the left-backed Kerala State Teachers Association, told The Indian Express that women&#8217;s right to pray was being &#8220;<\/span>violated by male-dominated protests at Sabarimala&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><span><span>&#8220;Those who have faith in the deity must be able to enter and pray,&#8221; she said.\u00a0<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p>A 23-year-old IT worker who also participated in the rally added: &#8220;We have to fight against blind traditions and superstitions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of thousands of Hindus &#8211; men, young girls and elderly women &#8211; trek to the temple for an annual festival that usually falls around the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court is set to hear challenges to its landmark ruling from January 22.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"32\">\n<p>\n            SOURCE:<br \/>\n            <span>Al Jazeera and news agencies<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tens of thousands of women in a southern Indian state have formed a 620km human chain in support of a\u00a0court order overturning\u00a0a partial ban on women entering one of Hinduism&#8217;s holiest temples.
