{"id":27635,"date":"2019-01-01T11:22:18","date_gmt":"2019-01-01T11:22:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=27635"},"modified":"2019-01-01T11:22:18","modified_gmt":"2019-01-01T11:22:18","slug":"uae-happy-to-help-host-qatar-2022-world-cup-matches","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=27635","title":{"rendered":"UAE &#8216;happy&#8217; to help host Qatar 2022 World Cup matches"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"125.017111567\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-arab-emirates.html\">United Arab Emirates<\/a> would be willing to step in and help host matches during the 2022 FIFA <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/events\/world-cup.html\">World Cup<\/a>, according to a senior Emirati sporting official.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Aref al-Awani, tournament director for the upcoming Asian Football Confederation&#8217;s (AFC) Asian Cup in the UAE, stressed that while there had been no formal approach from either <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/fifa.html\">FIFA<\/a> or the Qatar Football Association, the country\u00a0&#8220;would be willing to provide any help needed&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;If FIFA were to propose it, we would certainly look at the economic impact and media opportunities,&#8221; Awani said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>&#8220;It&#8217;s good to have football in the region&#8230; sports for us is to bring everybody together,&#8221; he added.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">FIFA is studying a proposal to expand the 2022 tournament in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/qatar.html\">Qatar<\/a> from 32 to 48 teams &#8211; an increase which would put extreme pressure on the Gulf state.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Qatar announced earlier this year that 90 percent of the tournament&#8217;s infrastructure would be in place by 2019, but four more stadiums would be required if the 48-team format is adopted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Awani did not explain how the Emirati participation would work given the country currently has no diplomatic ties with Doha.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The UAE alongside <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/saudi-arabia.html\">Saudi Arabia<\/a>, Bahrain, and Egypt imposed a <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2017\/06\/qatar-diplomatic-crisis-latest-updates-170605105550769.html\">blockade<\/a>\u00a0on the Gulf state, severing diplomatic and trade ties on June 5, 2017.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The quartet accuses Qatar of &#8220;supporting terrorism&#8221; and being too close to regional rival,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/iran.html\">Iran<\/a>. Qatar has repeatedly rejected the accusations as baseless.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Amid the ongoing blockade, Doha-based <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2017\/07\/uae-restores-qatar-bein-sports-network-air-170722144955060.html\">beIN sport<\/a> has gone dark for thousands of Emirati viewers after the broadcaster complained its content was being pirated.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">BeIN has exclusive rights to the\u00a0World Cup, which started on June 14 in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/russia.html\">Russia<\/a>. Its\u00a0channels were blocked in the UAE immediately after the crisis started, but were back on the air last July.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\"><span>Human right records concern<\/span><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Earlier this year, rights group <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/amnesty-international.html\">Amnesty International<\/a>\u00a0warned FIFA against expanding the 2022 World Cup to the UAE and Saudi Arabia, raising concerns about human rights in the Gulf states.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;Saudi Arabia and the UAE are in the throes of cracking down on government critics and prominent rights defenders,&#8221;\u00a0<span>Amnesty International UK&#8217;s head of policy and government affairs Allan Hogarth said in October.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>&#8220;An expansion of the Qatar World Cup into Saudi Arabia and the UAE ought to come with a proper acknowledgement from FIFA of the need for both countries to substantially improve their human rights record,&#8221; he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">On Monday, the UAE appeals court upheld a 10-year prison sentence to prominent pro-democracy activist\u00a0<a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/12\/uae-activist-mansoor-loses-final-appeal-10-year-sentence-181231111647858.html\">Ahmed Mansoor<\/a> for criticising the government on social media, Amnesty International reported.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Hassan al-Thawaid, the\u00a0<\/span>secretary-general of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy &#8211; the body tasked with getting Qatar ready to host the World Cup &#8211; stressed that the decision to expand from 32 to 48 teams would be taken after a feasibility study is completed in March.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"32\">\n<p>\n            SOURCE:<br \/>\n            <span>Al Jazeera and news agencies<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The United Arab Emirates would be willing to step in and help host matches during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, according to a senior Emirati sporting official.
