{"id":27278,"date":"2018-12-29T02:22:23","date_gmt":"2018-12-29T02:22:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=27278"},"modified":"2018-12-29T02:22:23","modified_gmt":"2018-12-29T02:22:23","slug":"israeli-author-amos-oz-dies-at-79","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=27278","title":{"rendered":"Israeli author Amos Oz dies at 79"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"121.343275287\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Amos Oz, one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/israel.html\">Israel<\/a>&#8216;s most famous authors, has died at the age of 79, his daughter confirmed on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span>&#8220;My beloved father, Amos Oz, a wonderful family man, an author, a man of peace and moderation, died peacefully today after a short battle with cancer,&#8221; Fania Oz-Salzberger wrote on Friday. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Born in 1939 to a family of Eastern European Jews who moved to British-occupied Mandate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/palestine.html\">Palestine<\/a>, Oz fought in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/focus\/1967-40yearsofoccupation\/2007\/06\/2008526113146572296.html\">1967 and 1973 Arab-Israeli wars<\/a> but was later a critic of Israel&#8217;s occupation of land captured in those conflicts.<\/p>\n<p>The novelist advocated a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, for which he said &#8220;painful concessions&#8221; needed to be made on both sides.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years he became a critic of what he called the &#8220;growing extremism&#8221; of his government, especially Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/benjamin-netanyahu.html\">Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a>, a position that made him the target of anger from Israel&#8217;s far right.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-conversation=\"none\" data-lang=\"en\" readability=\"10.4246153846\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Amos Oz in 2005: &#8220;Israel and Palestine\u2026are like the jailer and his prisoner, handcuffed to one another. After so many years, there is almost no difference between them: the jailer is no more free than his prisoner\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Such an absurd erasure of the structures of power was typical.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ben White (@benabyad) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/benabyad\/status\/1078682154840834048?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 28, 2018<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Palestinians and their supporters also voiced criticism of\u00a0<span>Oz, who they say shielded Israel from criticism over its occupation and for his support of Israeli wars in Gaza, as well as the 2006 Lebanon War.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>British author and pro-Palestinian activist Ben White said Oz&#8217;s views &#8220;echoed white South Africans&#8217; anxieties during\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/10\/south-africa-apartheid-era-fm-pik-botha-dies-181012095852625.html\">Apartheid<\/a>.<span>&#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>He referred to an opinion piece <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2000\/oct\/13\/comment.israelandthepalestinians1\" target=\"_blank\">written for the Guardian<\/a> at the start of the second Intifada, in which Oz said: &#8220;The Palestinian people are suffocated and poisoned by blind hate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For Oz &#8211; a committed proponent of ethnic separation &#8211; a Palestinian majority in a single state was an apocalyptic prospect,&#8221; White wrote.<\/p>\n<p>As an author, Oz was critically acclaimed, earning plaudits, such as the Goethe Prize, the Legion of Honor, the Franz Kafka Prize, and the Prince of Asturias Award in Literature.<\/p>\n<p>He published dozens of books and was best known for his memoir, A Tale of Love and Darkness, which actor and director Natalie Portman adapted for the screen in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was a tale of love and light, and now, a great darkness,&#8221; Israeli President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/01\/israeli-president-rivlin-visits-greece-criticism-180129131554866.html\">Reuven Rivlin<\/a> said in a statement eulogising Oz.\u00a0&#8220;Rest in peace, dear Amos.
